How is dorm life/community bathrooms?

What can I expect from living in a dorm and having to use a community bathroom?

It. Sucks. But this is probably simply because my entire dorm stack happened to be a bunch of guys with no personal hygiene skills. People don’t clean up after they shave, they don’t flush the toilets, they throw paper on the ground rather than in the trash can. This has simply been my personal experiences with the situation… I hope you get luckier.

^^^ THAT! Like in my mind I’d expected my floor to have some sense of home training!I live on a very girl heavy floor and I would expect these girls to be clean individuals, and boy was I wrong! I see dirty pads/tampons surrounding the toliets instead of IN the toliet or in those little mini trashcans they provide. Toliets aren’t flushed, hair is all over the showers. Just note that people will not be cleaner than you

I lived in a dorm, but my dorm was in a suite-style arrangement, meaning that each suite (which can have either 4, 6, or 9 people per suite. I was in a 4-person suite) has its own bathroom, so we’d only have to share a bathroom with our roommate and suitemates. It totally beat having to use a communal bathroom. Dorm life can be either quiet most of the time or just always loud, depending on who your peers are.

@Tigerb and nan1013 Are the bathrooms not cleaned daily at your schools!?

oh they are @Niquii77 so it’s nice when I wake up and the bathrooms are nice and clean but by the time I get ready to go to sleep I see how everything is spilled food (sometimes throwup on the weekends) are in the sinks, it’s the absolute worst!!!

But our lounges…that a whole 'nother mess

Oh, my goodness.

My two top picks for dorms both have communal bathrooms.

Meh, I’ll live XD

If you can find a dorm that has suite-style living, I think you will find that the bathroom situation is much, much better. Our daughter shares a suite with 3 suite mates. They take turns cleaning the bathroom once a week.

nan1013, I can’t believe that girls throw their pads or tampons on the bathroom floor!

@Niquii77 you totally win! but just giving you a forewarning hahaha

@aquamarinesea I know right?! I’m transferring though (not because of those reasons haha) but hopefully I’ll be able to get a suite style or apartment style living so I never have to experience that again!

When I was a college student in the 70’s, I earned extra money as a custodian cleaning a couple of buildings including both men’s and women’s restrooms. I can tell you without a doubt that the women’s restrooms were ALWAYS way dirtier than the men’s. Everyone was always surprised to hear that but there was no comparison!

@nan1013 Thanks for the forewarning! I figured I’d get the “college” experience. The good and bad.

@takeitallin I definitely believe you! I know at school I’m continually shocked by the crap that girls leave behind.

Oh my gosh yeah I know girls can be pretty unclean. Goodness I’m not looking forward to having to use a communal bathroom, haha. hopefully I don’t get a dirty room mate atleast.

The bathrooms are cleaned daily, but the same messy residents still use the bathroom once the janitors finish cleaning up. I’ve found soup, someone’s shaved “hair” (if you get where I’m going), you name it lying in our bathroom sink. I’m so ready to get an apartment next semester.

Well I’m glad my college only allows Juniors / Seniors to occupy the community style bathroom dorm (Only one building. The rest are suite style.) And I’m getting a suite style room in the fall.

It all depends on the dorm. Mine only fits 9 people, and has 6 in it currently, so we’ve only got 2 bathrooms (one is private for two guys, and the rest of us four have the other).
It can pose a bit of a problem, if you need to shower/shave/etc with three other people possibly needing that single bathroom… but I think a problem like that can be averted in most dorms.
The cleanliness has actually been alright in my experience, though. Maybe because fewer people are using each bathroom, I don’t know.

I was ok with the cleanliness of the bathrooms as well, and if one toliet/shower is gross there are other open ones. I lived in an old dorm but the bathrooms were remodeled a few years ago, some other dorms were newer but had worse bathrooms. (and some had much better ones). I wasn’t in a big party dorm so puke all over the place wasn’t much of an issue, it was a problem in the party dorms, most weekends.

Don’t forget that a suite bathroom means you have to clean it yourself…and you might have very lazy suitemates (never lived in one though)

@ aqsewfqq: I lived in a suite with a suite bathroom, but we had the cleaning staff come in once every two weeks to do a deep cleaning of our bathroom. The rest of the time, it was my suitemates and I who were responsible for keeping our bathroom clean (which actually wasn’t hard, since we were clean people).

^ Interesting, I did not know about this.

Wow, these dorm bathrooms sounds gross. I’ve actually never had an issue with any of our dorm bathrooms; in fact, my roommate and I are choosing to live in a communal hall again next year because we don’t have to clean the bathrooms ourselves. Maybe you’ll be lucky and live in a place where the staff cleans for frequently than some of the other dorms mentioned.

Good Luck in where you end up, either way.

We have a “fecal phantom,” ie someone that’s been pooping in random places on the floors. It’s pretty gross.
