Undergrads seem to hate it, but the alumni say it prepared them well for the real world.

thanx gshine_1989....

neone else??

Most people here just got really stressed---however, that's only because the classes here are really really tough. The thing is, everyone knows how difficult it is coming in here, so there's not much surprise. As with any technical school, you're gonna have the "dorks" or whatever, but there are so many interesting people. THere are people from all over the country and the world, and everyone is smart. Atlanta is such a fantastic city, and especially during the weekend, there is tons to do. Even within a 20 min walk, anyone can find a myriad of activities to do, and there are always places to explore. So no, not everyone here hates it. There's always grumbling, but because everyone struggles, there is a sense of...togetherness? for lack of a better word. Sorry for my rambling though, but GT really is a great place.

Hmmm. I should have applied, but they had the worst application ever so I didn't. Who in their right minds would make us write down our grades for each and every semester for the last three years?

But if I remember correctly, you didnt have to write an essay did you? I remember the Tech application as being pretty simple?

My bad.....I think I meant teacher recommendation instead of essay. Sorry a/b that.

travism416 : are you from GT???

Yeah I go here---do you have any questions for me?

My dad taught economics at GT for three years. He loved it, though he had issues with his department. He said that the students tended to be really grateful to be there, and that they worked much harder than students at Emory, where he taught before.
A serious con would be the campus, or lack thereof.

travism416 : Is it true that social life at GT is not good?

Social life at tech is somewhat different than other schools. Much of the entertainment comes from the frats/sororities, but there is plenty to do other than that. It's so easy to escape into Atlanta during the weekend, and the proximity to MARTA is awesome. Definitely go exploring on the weekends!! It is true though that much of the campus is dead during the weekend. If youre not into the frats and stuff, you can find someone who just wants to hang out in the dorms and watch tv/movies and do whatever.

I'm from Georgia and have alot of friends that go to Tech and this is what I've gathered from them. The classes are extremely hard. People who never made anything below an A in high school are just hoping they pass. The social life isn't great because first of all everybody is studying all the time, and secondly its just not. Alot of people head over to Athens (UGA) on the weekends to party. Some people like Atlanta, some don't. Just depends on your personal preference. If you strictly want a great education Tech is an awesome place. If your looking for a fun, laid back, party-filled college experience, Tech is probably not the place for you.

Yeah...Im from georgia also, and I can definitely second the fact that classes here are extremely hard. There are no joke classes here....even health, a required course for everyone, is difficult. I did really well in high school, and calc II here (which is calcII and linear algebra combined) tried to destroy me. However, if you study enough and go to enough tutoring, you'll do fine (as I ended up doign in calc2). Yeah, people definitely escape to UGA to party. I came from a relatively small city, so it's hard for me to believe that some people dont like it. There are people here who are scared to leave their dorm room. But Atlanta will give you more opportunities than say Athens or other small towns. There are plenty of internships, co-op jobs, restaurants, parks, etc to keep you occupied. But amylr is right...if you want a fantasic educaton, come here, but at least be aware that you will not be partying every night. Know that you WILL study a lot more than you think you will.

Anyone from you guys studying Computer Science? How is that?

hehe I was thinking about going to comp. sci but due to recent trends in that sector I changed my major to electrical engineering..I figured I could go into computers through that if I wanted to.

hmmm.... Actually ppl like you have actually bolstered my decision to go to comp. sci..... :p I am expecting a boom when I will graduate.. Talking of graduation, what is the average number of years it takes a person to graduate from GT? I have heard its ~5 years. Some ppl take even longer. Is it true?

A tech degree is really well respected in Georgia. I don't know about other states, but graduating from Tech(especially in the business world) is a huge plus, because most people in GA recongnize how hard the classes are.

Is the International Affairs & Modern Languages program at Tech any good?

Not really. IMO, it's better to get a Bachelor of Arts somewhere else.
