I'm trying to narrow down my college list a little, which means I have to decide whether or not I really would want to attend some of the places I was thinking of.

Does anyone have any information on USC or George Washington U? Like the types of people there, social scene, what the campus is like, etc.

any info appreciated =)

post this question on the 'colleges' section of this website

They are quite different. GW is really close to Washington's corridors of power...on a non-descript campus that you would think were just non-descript office buildings if there weren't GWU signs everywhere. Very high concentration of East Coast students, and a large Jewish contingent. Kinda doubt if GW is a first choice for many of them.

USC is a pretty, self-contained oasis of new wealth and the West Coast version of preppiness in a neighborhood that fans call "diverse" and detractors call "ghetto." As with all such situated colleges, its fans defeat their own argument for its safety by claiming it's perfectly safe unless you're stupid and go out alone or at night or outside the 2-block perimiter turf that the gigantic campus police force has won from the locals in house-to-house combat.

USC has lots of athletic/preppy type kids. (Similiar to the student body at BC).

GWU has lots of rich/flashy type kids. (Similiar to the student body at Emory).

TourGuide - that is the greatest description of USC ever!

"
GWU has lots of rich/flashy type kids. (Similiar to the student body at Emory).:
i've been to Emory and did not find their students to be flashy/snobby..they do have money( in most case) but not flash...maybe if compared to university of georgia but not if compared to vanderbilt, duke, UVA, and other preppy schools

The students at Emory aren't really like the kids at Duke/Vandy/UVA.

Duke/Vandy/UVA has kids who are more athletic and dress more conservative. Lots of kids from top NE prep schools. Very old-money schools.

Emory draws more upper-middle class neighborhoods on Long Island. Heavier Jewish population. Same with WashU.

Ahem! USC? Which one? USC (California) is a fine PRIVATE school in Los Angeles, with storied history in sports and is highly selective.

But south of the Mason Dixon Line USC means University of South Carolina-Columbia. A very good state school with amazing sports and some pretty strong academic programs (international business rated number one), its HALF the size of Georgia or NCState or Tennessee etc.

Just pointing that out.

No one outside of South Carolina confuses USC for anything but Southern Cal. Nor would they describe it as just "fine" when compared to "very good" Southern Carolina.

ToCollege, thank you. You are most generous. I just hate it when people say that it's unrealistic to expect an urban campus to be such that you can do something wacky like walk off campus alone or go out at night without Seal Team 6 guarding you...as if living in the major cities of the world all entail Baghdad-level danger and duck-and-run tactics. No, the problem isn't with the sheltered students who expect better, it's with the thugs who prey on them and the civil liberties types who lack the law enforcement cajones to protect them.
