Hello
I am a prospective transfer student and I have important questions regarding Columbia University and Rice University.
I'm applying to both schools as a econ major.
I want to find out more about Columbia and Rice from people currently attending these schools or know well about them.

1) How is student and faculty relationship at Columbia and Rice? Is it easy to get to know professors?

2) How large are most economics classes?

2) Are there easily available opportunities for research projects as a econ major?

Please help me on this~ I really need to know more about those schools~
Thanks in advance guys~

i got into Rice last year as a freshman, i dont know much about it, great school

for columbia:

classes will be big (duh, its a university). contact with professors will be minimal unless you seek them out, in which case, im sure they'll be avaialble. also, columbia has been on a real streak recently with its econ department, with lots of new hirings of prestigious profs. check out the dept's website, im sure they have some propoganda for you.

i don't know about rice.

thank you guys for the replies~ ^^
oh and darkstar, so classes are large
but how large? like in numbers? more than 100?
yeh i searched website, but they did not have
much information...

as is the case everywhere, it depends what you're taking. if you're taking econ 101, its gonna be like 400 hundred+; advanced econometrics.... not so much. and of course, you break up in sections and have prefects, so its not always THAT big.

how about 300 levels? because my current school has more than 100 for even 300 levels.
Thank you darkstarr~!

And anyone know about research opportunities either at Rice or Columbia?
Thank you all for the help~!

just choose columbia.

i like both schools and i want to find out more about these schools
and i don't think i can get accepted to columbia or rice.
i am just hoping ^^

anyone know about Rice or Columbia?
any current students help me out?
thanks~!

student-faculty relationships are pretty good at rice, i'd say. as long as you're willing to make the effort to get to know your professors, it's pretty easy. (i'm currently at rice btw)

at rice, as you get into more advanced classes they thin out a lot, i think. i'm not in any econ classes but that's the general trend.

At Rice an intermediate macro or micro class will have about 40-60 people. The upper level classes have about 20-30 people... on average. Columbia has a more recognizable program, but the professors here at Rice are generally good and helpful. As far as research opportunities go... I think mathematical econ majors are required to take a semester of research. Also, keep in mind that the Baker Institute employs several undergrad research assistants each year.
