How is Muir?

I've heard that UCSD may be a little bit on the "dull" side (I hope not), but I've also heard that John Muir College is one of the more social schools.
I'm not looking to party every single night, but I do want to party occasionally to meet new people and enjoy everything.
So in general, how's dorm life @ Muir?

Join the greek system if you want a great social life! :)

^i totally agree. even if you don’t for sure know if you want to go greek or have even the slightest interest, rush.

i’m a muir student living in the res halls right now. i think its awesome. idk much about how the other colleges structure their dorms but in muir, we have a “house” system. there are eleven houses, five in tioga, four in tenaya, and two in the apartments. (each two consecutive floors in the res halls constitute a house)
each house has two HA’s instead of RA’s. (house advisors) who put on cool programs in muir.

so between living in your room, living in your suite, living across from another suite, and living in your house, i’ve found that its really easy to make friends. in my house, i know that everyone is really close with each other because my HA’s set up lots of “bonding” type events (house dinners, house meetings, house “field trips”, etc.). of course i can’t speak on account of everyone’s experiences, but i think it’s awesome.

keep in mind that muir specifically has a ton of orgs which you should definitely look into especially if you want to do stuff besides study.

Thanks! That sounds great, I’m happy with my decision :)

Also, I have a friend going to muir. We don’t necessarily want to be roommates, but we want to atleast be in the same house. Is there any way we can request that?

you can’t request housemates or suitemates, unfortunately. however, as a second year, you can request to live in the same apartment with each other.

i applied for housing online last week, but did it really just only take two clicks? i felt like it’s not completed …

^So far that’s all you do. They’ll get back to you with more stuff later.

It is really easy to make friends if you join in activities. If you are expecting big alcohol binge frat style parties, you won’t find very much of that. There are dances, games, random fun kid stuff, and lots of college oriented clubs like the Muir Musical, Muir Quarterly, etc. It all depends on what one means by “party”. Everyone here worked their butt off to get here, people with 4.2 GPAs in high school are not generally hard-core party animals. It doesn’t mean we don’t know how to play and have fun. A few people who worked too hard in high school bust loose and let themselves go wild once they are away from home but the first quarter grades usually give them a wake-up call. This is not your “BS your way through half your Mickey-Mouse classes” experience. You quickly learn to balance work with play, but there is always something fun going on at Muir if you seek it out and show up.
