How is the business school?

Is it ranked well compared to the other universities in the Northeast

Depends on which universities. It’s It’s not one of the top 10, but it’s in the top 100. There are ratings out there, I think Business Week.

The college president used to be the head of the Wharton School at Penn and while he says that he wants to upgrade the school’s standing in all areas, you have to figure that he really wants to get the business school’s reputation moved up. They do seem to be making some changes… my son is a Sport management major (double major with Finance) and it used to be in the health school. As of this fall, it has been moved to the Business school, which is a much better place for it, and also makes it much easier to double major with something else in the business school and be better prepared when they graduate.

When you apply to Delaware, do you have to designate one of the specific colleges? Some schools require you to apply directly to the College of Business, College of Engineering, etc. If so, is it tougher to aim for Business or to just go for Arts and Sciences?

They ask for your major on the application. The school is determined by that. Some majors are supposedly very competitive, like nursing. You can also put down undecided. My son switched to a Business School major after 1 semester without any problems.

misterbill - the sports mgmt major is always located in such strange places - good to hear they finally moved it to business - I heard that was a planned change when we visited Delaware with S1 2 years ago. I have seen sports mgmt in the Dept. of Education, in Kinesiology, etc. Business makes much more sense. How does your son like the program? Any pros or cons you’d care to list?

Hi… he likes the program but he’s only taken one Sport Management class so far. He definitely likes the new business curriculum much better than when it was in the HESC school since it has a lot of overlap with his Finance major. Interesting that they told you 2 years ago that it was a planned change. When we were there for decision day last April, and I asked someone in the business school about it, the person basically rolled their eyes and said it was political. We only found out about the change when we showed up for orientation.

I believe that the head of SM is going to get him connected with a graduate student this semester to do some research (my son is only in his 2nd year, although he will be a junior after the math class he is taking at home this summer). There are not a lot of honors kids in the Sport Management program (in fact, my son may be the only one) so it is nice that they are going to try to do stuff for him.
