How is the job market for Econ majors?

I’m not sure what to major in at LSA. I was thinking about majoring in Econ + minor in CS, work for 4 or 5 years, then go to a top 20 MBA program to pursue a career in corporate finance/accounting. But how is the job market for Econ grads at uMich? What kind of jobs do most get right after graduation? Are there any certain feeder companies for uMich Econ majors?

  1. Econ majors get the reputation of didn't get into Ross, regardless of whether you actually applied or not
  2. Econ is theoretical in general, not really applicable to real life
  3. Michigan Econ is notoriously known for being Keynesian
  4. You're better off doing Stats since Big Data is really good right now, more useful for consulting, analyst positions

Stats seems interesting. Are there any other less math-oriented majors you would recommend if I want to work in Big Data?

I’d recommend looking at the BS in Data Science.

I really like the direction it takes, making good use of the information age

School of Information does not have Data Science yet. They just have a BSI just like how Ross kids have BBA but no official major.

Data Science is a new program this year in both LSA and Engineering. Just like how it’s similar in Computer Science.

Really depends on what you plan to do with it post-graduation. If you want to go onto grad school, there is no better PhD path right now than Economics.
