Is there any one of you that have gone into the path or want to go into the path of:

Major: Computer Science
Minor: Economics
(or double major in these two)

How did you like taking these courses in Michigan and how valuable are these degrees when finding a job with big tech companies?

I am very interested in Math/Computer Science, therefore, I feel like this is a good idea.

You’re probably better off doing IOE with CS major/minor
Could be doable in 4 years if you come in with enough credits

IOE and Econ aren’t the same. Nor would minoring in CS really help him get a software development job (if that’s what he wants - he said tech company but not what role). Additionally, majoring in IOE + Minor in CS is going to be more credits in requirements than majoring in CS and minoring in Econ. Same with double majoring in IOE and CS compared to double majoring in CS and Econ.

I think OP is trying to look for something applicable with both Econ and CS.

If so, he’ll find that Econ is too theoretical for those purposes. Financial Math is a little better option too

I can’t speak higher about a degree in Computer Science from Umich. I just transferred into the CS Engineering Dept. from a local Community College.

I haven’t finished my first semester and I have absolutely no professional experience on my resume. I have already been offered two different paid internships (I accepted one at $25/hr 40/wk during the summer).

I’ve also been offered a position on a multidisciplinary design project. 500 engineering students applied, 200 where accepted. The only reason I was accepted was because their need for CS students. I literally don’t have a Umich GPA yet, so it certainly wasn’t merit based.

More than 60% of the employers at the engineering career fair where seeking CS majors. In my opinion, if your seeking a position in high-tech companies, a degree in CS is a good direction.

My personal interests are also Math/Computer Sci.

In regards to the classes, if you put in the effort you will be rewarded. Simple as that. Good luck with your decision.
