How is the Music dept. at UCSC?

Question of my girlfriends.

that's not very specific.
i like the building. if you are a music major i would recommend living at college 8 or oakes or porter/kresge for the sake of convenience if you're not too picky about the vibe.

Music dept as in standing nationwide, is it a good program? Stuff like that.

My husband is a musician and music teacher in the area, with experience in advanced music study (BA and MA). He has had a couple of students go on to the Music program at UCSC. His impression is that the program is a good one. He helped his students prep for placement exams and saw material which he thought looked very good.

I remember speaking with one of these students, who said he had "never worked so hard and gotten such poor grades" in his life. I think he had a double major though ... Music and something else. I felt sorry for him, but the program sounds rigorous.

Thank you Lyre! I'll be sure to pass it on. :)

the 2nd year of the music series is really tough it seems but i think it really depends what level of musicianship you are at... it seems to get a little easier though but i cant say for certain since i am not the one taking the classes.
i still find it a little odd because i always assumed that musicians would go to a conservatory ranking wise. apparently it is much better than cal's music program... though the bf feels like ucla's program is more prestigious merely because it is more competitive.

What's her instrument? I was admitted as a sophomore to the music program. I come from a very competitive music school for voice/opera. UCSC seems strong. They emphasized to me that they have a very holistic approach to theory and musicianship etc.

She plays piano and flute. I think she'd probably focus on piano though.

Admitted to UCSC for Fall 2009 but not the outdoorsy type. How’s community of students in the vocal performance? Are the students tight knit and friendly, or, does it get competitive about grades, etc. Do music students have fun together?
