How is the social atmosphere at UT for studens not from Texas?

Just wondering how diverse the student body is in terms of state of origin, and if those not from Texas or an immediately surrounding state may feel left out. Insights, experiences?

And is Austin less politically conservative than the rest of the state?

About 95% of UT Austin students come from Texas. You can definitely expect both the city of Austin as well as the university itself to be more liberal than the rest of Texas, but there will be people of every political stripe. UT is about 18 % Asian, 22% Hispanic, 4% Black, 3% multiracial, and 48 % white (using US News & World Report stats).

As a student from Florida, I felt a little weird being at Texas my first semester. Texans are really, really proud of who they are. But, they’re also really welcoming! Join an organization and reach out to people in your major. It’ll help tremendously! Good luck.

Hook em horns.

I am from Texas and I have met many students here not from Texas and after knowing them for a long time, didn’t even notice they were from out of state until they Facebook friend requested me and I saw their hometown location. I don’t see why that would be a problem. I can understand an international student being easy to pick out and I have never been able to pick out out-of-state students.

Yes, Austin is the most liberal city in Texas. We have both liberal and conservative organizations on campus so you don’t have to give up your political affiliation lol…

Thank goodness my husband, from Wisconsin, decided to attend UT! That’s where we met, in grad school. He called several of the top engineering grad schools in the country, and UT was the friendliest (it was my dad, a prof, he talked to when he called!).
