I need to choose between Scripps and CMC. Both schools have great academics. But CMC is more business-y and Scripps is a bit more liberal arts-y/ humanities.

I'm going into pre-med.... so I would think I would feel out of place at CMC. I hear its the Slytherin of the consortium. I'm an extrovert, and I love spontaneity and friendly people.

But CMC is covering all of my need. I would graduate with $14,000 with subsidized loans at Scripps.

So, I guess my main question is, would I feel welcomed at CMC?

Also... I have the Interdisciplinary Science Scholarship. How is the work load for dual majors?

Since I am not a student, I am going to let someone else answer your questions, however I couldn’t resist dealing with the Slytherin reference. First of all, because I have not read the Potter books (I may be the only person in America) I had to do a Wikipedia search to understand its meaning. According to that site, it is the home of students who exhibit such traits as cunning and ambition. “The house has a negative reputation, with many claiming that it is the source of most Dark Wizards.” Yes, many CMC students are ambitious, but the other stereotypes are ridiculous. Where do people get this stuff about CMC? Who are telling you these things? You need to go to the Admissions Day Orientation and see the school and meet the students, because you do not have an accurate picture of the school. By the way, you mentioned that you’re outgoing and extroverted. I think you will find CMC to be a good fit in those areas.

no one is trying to insult CMC by calling it slytherin. I think it fits perfectly along with the pomona= gryffindor scripps/hmc= ravenclaw pitzer= hufflepuff haha (:

nothing wrong with being in slytherin either!

/posts in thread solely because of HP

Edit: I feel that the student body of CMC and Scripps are pretty different–and in obvious ways (I don’t want to go into stereotypes). CMC has this pretty school-specific vibe, and so does Scripps. When you visit, you’ll see that quite clearly, and I think you will be able to figure out which one is a better “fit” pretty easily.

Another CMC parent here. My D was looking at premed at one point. CMC has excellent placement into med school. That is probably the 1st thing you should be looking for, and after that the mantra is avoid debt at all costs. If you were my daughter (and we come from a family full of docs) I would recommend CMC based on that, but I also know that as wonderful as Scripps is, it was not a good fit for my D.

Now if the money is not a consideration for your family and you think you would do substantially better in the Scripps environment, then go for it. You should do well where you are happy. Some girls feel that they have more opportunities to shine at women’s colleges.

There are many premeds at CMC. In fact, whether you go to Scripps or CMC you will take your prereqs in joint sciences (along with the Pitzer students).

My daughter was also torn between the all business vibe at CMC and her humanities side. But she has stayed involved in music and has taken lit and foreign language classes that she has loved. You can have both! She just felt that CMC was the best fit for her, overall. She has good friends at Mudd, Scripps and Pomona. (One of her Scripps friends she met in a lit course at CMC.)

So anyway…follow the money, med school admission stats and your heart. You will figure it out. You don’t have a bad choice!

Blarghh, You may be right that there is nothing wrong being in Slytherin. I guess the reference to Dark Wizards threw me off. I don’t agree about the cunning part, but there are many achievement-oriented, strong leader-types at CMC. Anyway, next time I am at the school, I will have to look for some Dark Wizards.

Well, Scripps has Spend A Day in Our Shoes that same weekend, so I’m going to call both colleges and see if I can juggle those events…hahaha
I’m so excited, I have an adrenaline rush…
