How is the uci biology program.

How is the uci biology program as compared to ucsd's.

It gets the job done teaching core science courses on a reasonable difficulty. It’s very structured with little flexibility until 3rd year. Bio and chem core are taken all throughout 1st and 2nd year in a very specific order. Upper division elective/lab/required bio courses (flexible) as well as basic physics is taken in the latter years.

Research opportunities are abundant at every UC, UCI being one of them with several organized research centers.

Not sure how UCSD’s program is. UCSD has Scripps and they literally churn out publications like butter.

kool, thanks

Actually I take that back, I just learned Scripps isn’t a part of UCSD… but it’s right across the street pretty much.

UCI is a big pre med campus so the majority wants to be a doctor and they know what it takes… From what i heard they drop the bottom 15 percent every year…

is the Bio program at UCI comparable to that at UCSB (arts and sciences, not CCS)? I received admissions to both colleges and honors at UCSB if that makes a difference. I went to the chancellor’s reception for UCSB for honors/regents so I’ve clearly been suaded toward UCSB. Also, does anyone know how the campuses between UCI and UCSB compare in terms of size and research facilities. I’m not really interested in Marine Biology, and both campuses seem pretty secluded although UCI is more urban.

hah dude I was just gonna start this thread.
thanks

I would definitely say the Bio Sci program at UCI is more than comparable to UCSB’s program. UCI is very strong Biological Sciences including Neurobiology and Chemical Biology and with the medical school around their is tons of biomedical research to get involved with. The school of biological sciences is very big on undergraduate research, there are tons of options to get involved in research in the school of biological sciences, school of medicine or in biomedical engineering. Here is a list of bio 199 postings: [Bio 199 Positions Document](http://www.bio.uci.edu/Bio199/positions/index.cfm)
The list is just a fraction of the opportunities available though.

A lot of the bio sci facilities are fairly new, NS1/NS2 are not that old, BS3 is brand new, and Steinhaus got refurbished recently. Irvine is not really isolated. Newport Beach is ~5 minutes away. Disneyland is close, LA is about an hour north and San Diego is a little more than an hour south.

kool, thanks

and also I have one more question. Is Mesa court or Middle Earth closer to the biological sciences building? And also which one is better in general :D.

ok this is random, but how would you compare Davis’s and Irvine’s bio programs

I don’t know much about Davis =/

About Middle Earth/Mesa Court I would say it is a draw in closeness to Bio Sci buildings. Middle Earth is closer to campus in general but is about directly opposite of the school of biological sciences and science library. Mesa is not quite as close to campus but I would say is the same distance if not closer to the Science Library and the rest of the Bio Sci buildings.
Now that I have said that, don’t choose your housing complex that way. As a freshman you will have classes everywhere. I had chemistry classes in SSLH, Bio classes in ELH, and humanities classes in the ICS buildings my Freshman year.
