My friend who goes there, who was 3rd in our class, NHS president, class president, with a perfect 4.0 GPA, said it was "frantic".

So yes, I'd guess its going to be difficult.

It's a handful. I notice that a lot of people spend a lot of effort and stress on their schoolwork. Classes are difficult, and you should expect to put in at least equal amount of time outside of class.

Personally, I wish people at CMU would lighten up a bit. I tend to take it easy myself, and I find relaxing from time to time.... or for at least a short while every day has a positive impact on both my grades and my mental health.

In short, expect a lot of work. I went to public high school and did alright. Workload roughly doubled, even though you're in class for a much shorter time per day. (I suppose you could use this extra time throughout the day to get that extra work done.)

EDIT: I've never met someone who had a 4.0 GPA in high school, who held a position similar to class president, who didn't lead a "frantic" life. I think it may just be a personality trait of your friend.

I'm a computer science major, and so are most of my friends. We're always busy, doing projects or problem sets, but I wouldn't say that people are "study-crazy", because CS majors rarely study. We're just busy doing assigned work; exam weeks are always easy because there's no homework and all the projects are done by then.
