I basically heard all good things about the school.
However, almost everyone I know who goes to CMU or knows someone who goes there says that they hate it because the professors give too much work!
Is this true? Do students have lives there or is it just studying?

Students have lives here in that they do stuff other than study all day. This may be truer for some majors more than others - it seems to be generally true that Architecture majors ("Arcies"), by the time they graduate, have lost the ability to sleep because they haven't done so in five years. There are lots of extracurricular activities to get involved in, including intramural and club sports.

It also depends on how many courses you sign up for. As a CS major, I came in with some IB credits and thus could take four classes a semester and graduate with the bare minimum required. Four classes leaves you tons of free time. You can give yourself an easy or hard semester as you want; just make sure to plan ahead so you actually can graduate in four (or however many) years.

how about economics? H&SS or Tepper?

Pretty easy... 3.8 here with CS courses.

sound like i'm in for a treat then (arch major)... I tend to get about 8 hours a night now, just because i can. Crap.

The stereotype about arcies isn't necessarily true...but I have talked to a few who say they do have quite a heavy workload.

what about chemical engineering majors? do they have any social lives (like clubs and intramurals... and a bit of partying??)

I'd guess so...I don't know any ChemE majors very well, though.

how's the workload for econ majors in H&SS?
