How is this essay topic?

I'm working at a research lab at a psychiatric hospital this summer. My essay would start out by telling an anecdote of my experience and my essay will talk about how I approached the field by "making it my own". As in, how I am able to apply my passion I've gotten thru research to helping the ppl in my personal life suffering from mental health issues. How I have developed an complex opinion about the multi-faceted field of mental health/psychiatry, which although I will build on in the future, shows that the field is a part of me- that I've made it my own by internalizing it and thinking of it in a personalized way. (Like, working to decrease stigma about mental illnesses around me when everyone else thinks otherwise; how I communicated with inpatients treating them like they ought to be- as regular people; how I am involved in peer-to-peer alcohol awareness groups; how I hope to study neuroscience in college with a final goal to make a contribution to this field in my life, etc.)

What do you think about this topic? If I should change something what should I change?

Bump 10 char

It sounds good in theory, and if done right I think it could make a really good topic. Just don’t make it too technical and keep it about you. It doesn’t really fit any off the common app topics though (maybe #1) and you might not be able to talk about all that in 650 words. Regardless,I say go for it, if it doesn’t work you have plenty of time to do something else.

Thanks! I’ll keep that in mind :)

It is possible you can write about this in a creative way but make sure it doesn’t get too depressing. Just reading your original post was depressing. Sorry.

Ya I get it…ill figure out how to phrase things

Although it sounds like it would be a great essay, it really doesn’t fit any of the new Common App essay topics. The Common Application did away with “Topic of Your Choice” because they want students to thoughtfully write on a specific prompt. If you try to fit “Topic Of Your Choice” into one of the 5 new essay prompts, then you run the risk of not answering the question. And for some colleges, that might sink your application. Good luck!

Yea i thought of that…but what about choice #1- “some students have a story or background so central to their identity…etc.” Could my essay count as that?

Definitely. If that’s what you want to write about you can make it work.
