I'm a junior so I still don't have any essays, but I have a potential idea for next year and would like your advice on what you think of it(assuming I have a relatively open ended question/prompt):
It would be about why I want to pursue a career related to neuroscience. This coming summer I'm interning at a neuropsychiatry lab, so I want to elaborate on my future experience and how it would make me more sensitive to people with neurological or mental illnesses and want to devote my life to finding a cure to such diseases. Another reason is that I had a severe neurological problem when I was a child (epilepsy) and it was nearly impossible back then to find an effective cure but by sheer miracle I survived and am now fine and want to contribute to this field to help others like I was.
-tell me if this is a good idea

Yes, it is a good idea because it gives you a reason to be passionate about what you’re writing. But keep in mind that ANY topic can be a bad topic just like ANY topic can be a good topic depending on how you write it.

Thanks! Anyone else?

Not bad at all. Your topic relates to your personal experiences. And what Aerobug said is very ture, any topic can be bad or good depending on how you write it.
I suggest you don’t start writing in a bland way, such as ‘I love [enter subject here] because [this][this] reason and [this] happened to me.’

Be careful when writing about your condition. Make sure you don’t end up writing in a way as if you are looking for pity. Remember this important thing about essays- don’t tell them, SHOW them.

I have a similar story in that something medical that happened to me caused me to want to pursue a particular field. I think that as long as you made it sound like a story and not a list of facts, you could pull it off
