I’m 17 years old and just finished my junior year of high school.
I have a 4.14 gpa but I have very very low standardized test scores. I’ve never been good at multiple choice styled exams and so I’m afraid my admission to JHU will be completely rejected because of my scores.
I’ve only taken each exam once.
SAT (new version): 1110
Math 2: 630
ACT: 23
I will be taking my national registry exam to become an EMT soon and I’ve passed the practical exam already. This class is dual enrolled so I receive I think about 7 college credits from it.
My Extracurriculars:
-President of Red Cross club
-Treasurer for Math Honor Society
-Active member of National Honor Society
-President of Future Medical Leaders of America
-member of STEM club
-member of science Olympiad
-Alternate President of Asian club
I am very passionate about cardiology and I’ll be participating in Camp Cardiac over the summer in GWU and I also volunteer in the coronary care unit of my local hospital.
Will my scores keep restrict me from being admitted to JHU?
I forgot to mention my courses…

The only problem is your scores… Unfortunately there are so low!
I’m not going to sugarcoat it - your scores are extremely low for Hopkins.
Your scores. Hopkins Middle 50%
1110. 1420-1530
23. 32-34
I can’t really see any way for you to overcome this discrepancy unless you have some kind of major hook - and even then I’m not confident.
Anything can happen, but unless you can pull up those test scores I’d put your chances of admission at extremely slim.
There is no way they will admit you with scores so low - you might think it unfair, but I think it’s more unfair that the 2200+s get rejected from this level of school. If you can miraculously pull your ACT up to a 30-31+, you’d be considered. I don’t know how realistic such an increase is, but it’s worth a shot. Good luck to you - look at other schools as well!!!
I’m a rising senior as well. I know exactly how you feel about the test scores…if I were you, I would choose definitely take another standardized test in the fall of senior year, and in my opinion, I would choose the ACT. (i took the act as well.) You’ll have to work really hard and do practice everyday for the rest of the summer, but I honestly feel that (and a lot of people have agreed with me) the ACT is easier than the SAT.
If you are determined to get into Hopkins, then I would say really work on preparing for the ACT. When I first took it, I had a 26, and then I prepared and was able to take my score up to a 35. Feel free to PM me with any questions about ACT prep and good luck!
@owlmahogany148 can you tell me what book you used
i used the “Real ACT prep guide”, its the official ACT prep book made by the people who make the ACT. The best way to increase your score is to do many many many timed practice sections. Don’t get discouraged early on, just keep working and I’m sure you’ll see improvement. Let me know if you have any other questions!
