How likely to get into top-notch Econ grad school from washu?

I'm considering attending washu next year but I'm concerned about the likelihood of getting into a top graduate school for Econ (like Columbia, northwestern, or better) from washu. Their business school seems pretty strong but I don't think I'd want to do undergraduate business as it might be too limiting and/or seen as too easy or narrow, but I'm also worried about the strength of washu's economics department.

Also, if I wanted to get a job and work for a while (for example, in consulting) before going to grad school, would the normal Econ or undergrad business degree be better? Thanks so much.

They will prepare you very well for top econ grad programs as long as you’re willing to put lots of time and efforts in econ and math/stats classes.

Hey you will definitely be able to get into a top notch Econ grad school from WashU and many many students have done so in the past. You should know that WashU students that chose to go to grad school do get into the best grad schools around and WashU does have a very good reputation with grad schools.

Basically, there are two paths you can take. If you want to study theoretical Econ, and then go on to do research/ be an analyst/ go to Econ grad school, studying Econ in Art Sci would be the way to go.

But if you want to go into consulting, the Economics and Strategy major in the business school is pretty much a major designed to serve as a path into consulting. If you feel that getting an undergrad degree from the business school is too limiting, you can always add a second major in math/polisci etc in Art Sci and then go on to get an MBA later if business/consulting is your ultimate goal.

WashU offers so many great choices and options and you should definitely attend and take advantages of all the great programs here!

Also, feel free to message me if you have any questions!
