I've got 505 words.

923 words, 3 pages
double spaced

I love how people are commenting on how Harvard and Yale toss your essays if it's over 700 words. I picture admissions people just sitting there and counting how many words and then when they realize it's over 700 they toss it into a giant fireplace. LOL.

But in all seriousness, I doubt they have a set limit. I think 1,000 should be the so called "limit." It's about the quality and the notion that an adcom would throw out a well written essay because of length is ridiculous. It is key that you don't repeat yourself though and add superfluous details. Mine was 780 words or something like that. It feels short though.

870 words, and not going down. I worried about it, and after four people telling me that it was really good and not to dare change it, I stopped sweating it. If this essay doesn't grab them, then I probably wouldn't like attending the college anyway.

506, but I'm doing constant revisions on it.

Mine's 591, and I'm happy with it :)

Yeah, I have exactly the same question!!
At the moment, my common app essay is just over 700 words... I don't know if I'm going to change it anymore.

I just wanted to bump up this thread because of this information:

I applied to Yale with a 1,200 word Commonapp essay (and they ask for less than 500) and I got in. So if your essay is truly exceptional, they'll be kind about the word limits.

Good luck!

I'd say anything that is less than 700 will definately be alright. My essay was slightly over 600 words.

Mine is just under 1000 and just under 3 pages, double spaced. I was worried for a while, but some people have had good results. I'm not that worried anymore. Besides, one of my friends got in 5/5 places she applied, and hers was almost 3 pages also.

555 which upside down and reversed is 555 I think thats a good sign

mine is ~750

the words they limit to... diff college diff essay

People!
Your essays are way too long! >500 should be cut down. >1000 you seriously need to reconsider the structure of your essay. Pick one event instead of several to write about. No college will read your essay word for word, especially the ones that are losely constructed. They will just flip through the pages.

Keep that in mind. Don't curse at me. Thx.

I think the limit should be like 700 words unless you think you can keep the reader attentive for 1000 words. Anything over 400 words is definitely fine as long as it actually says something significant.

my birthday is actually june 14 - i hope they see how clever that is. and it was totally accidental.

I kept mine to under a page by at least 3 lines, and tried to make the most paragraphs without looking stupid. When I really thought about it, it came down that when I read, if I see a super dense page or several with a lot of intro etc, I skim it. I spent like 9 days on that stupid essay, and I don't want it to be skimmed

Around 650

Mine is a little over 750. When I submitted it, I thought it 750 words would be considered on the shorter side. I had no idea that 500 words was the norm. I was thinking 1000. Now I'm worried. =(
