Hmmm mine is currently 751...... should I seriously consider shortening, or it passable?

mine is 742 >.<

however, i don't shorten "have not" to "haven't" or "did not" to "didn't"

should I ?

Naw, that's less professional

just to be sure, you are all talking about the writing portion of the actual application and not the supplements?

edit:
nvm i figured it out lol.

Mine is 1600 but I am definitely NOT changing it. The length is just enough to fully explain an extracurricular I am really passionate about and they will never have heard of.

Mine is 1,004, down from an all-time high of 1,709.

I think I've hacked at it all I can.

^^ I've decided to cut mine down LOL.

It'll probably be as long as yours.

Mines twelve pages double spaced (5 3/4 single) do you think this is too long? I know everyone says a couple hundred words but I couldn't fit it all in there. I hope admissions understands.

No matter how freaking interesing your essay might be! anything over 700 or 800 is just stupid. Good luck on boring the admission committee

So do you think my 12 page one is too long? What if I made the font really really small.

Currently mine is exactly 702 words.
Luckily I read this thread before really getting into writing, or else I would have probably ended up somewhere around 1300-1500 words =). I haven't edited though, so once I do I might end up with more or less words depending...
I'm generally a great writer but my biggest problem is trying to condense. sigh

^completely agree...u guys worry about things that are not important.
i got into UChicago EA with a 1400 word essay. chill....its not too long, if its captivating, and coherent.

about 600 words. had to cut out a lot.

Just 453 words using the guidelines I had for the NYU app.

Unless you're really confident in your writing ability, otherwise more than 700 words is probably gonna make some readers go to sleep...

what if its a dialogue kinda essay? like mine!.. well, right now its 770, but it might go up to over 800.

whheex, I think it's okay to have some more words than others when it's dialogue..
Mine was 876 words, but thats because I had to type out a sort of long dialogue because it was important to my essay (it was about an experience).
But I would say anything over 1,000 is getting WAY to high unless you are the most spectacular writer in the state or something lol...you should be fine..

Mine is 1,500 and I'm not worried in the slightest about them thinking its too long.

Mine is 1,385..I know it is seems too long but it really isn't when you read it

The size isn't really that important. Its the way its written! I have a 770 words essay btw.
