How Long Did It Take You to Seek Treatment (ADHD)

When did you know your child likely had a disorder, and how long did it take for you to seek professional treatment? I assume there is a certain process of acceptance that has to go along with this choice. At least that's what I'm going through. Where did you start?

(This is for my youngest child, nowhere near college age)

Hi there,
I usually don’t post on this board but saw your post and wanted to respond.

I always knew something wasn’t quite right with my DS2. I couldn’t put my finger on it but once he got into school the problems didn’t go away but rather became issues. He was a smart kid who had terrible fine motor control, was clumsy tripping over his own feet, always in motion, etc. etc.

We started testing at the beginning of 4th grade, got the official diagnosis and started meds by March of that year. That was 4 years ago and I tell you the difference has been amazing.

My DS now remembers to take hits med everyday especially if he has something of importance going on, I.e., sports game, big test.

About middle of 2nd grade. It seems that’s when the school environment becomes obviously challenging.

I’ve just been diagnosed today. I will be attending my dream school in the fall but am left wondering if things would have been different had I found help earlier.

I knew something wasn’t right in Kindergarten. Teachers said he ought to be checked for ADHD in 3rd grade. I held out until he started 9th grade and he couldn’t focus long enough in class to do well. If I had to do it over I would have had him checked in back in 3rd grade but I really didn’t want to go the drug route and thought he could learn to cope.

DD was a senior in high school when we finally realized something was off and had her tested.

Carotid, see if you can find an ADD/LD coach to help you develop some good habits before going off. It is really critical to be able to organize oneself and stay ahead of the disability.

We suspected that our middle child had ADHD from the time he was in kindergarten. We took him to a counselor in 6th/7th grade who was supposed to be able to evaluate him. She said he did NOT have it - I suspect because he is such a good talker, she didn’t detect it. It wasn’t until he started seeing a psychiatrist and was diagnosed as bipolar that we knew he had ADHD for sure. It’s hard to treat ADHD in a bipolar person, because the meds can make him manic. His doctor thinks that the ADHD is a bigger issue than the bipolar for him! Sigh. Even when you try to do the right thing, it’s not enough.

Thanks All.
