How long does it take to get across campus?

How long does it take to get across campus? How often do the buses come? For example, how long does it take to go from the East Campus to Bio Science building? Thanks!

The answer to the question is kinda complicated and it depends on which bus you take and where on East Campus you depart from. For the last two years I have lived in Pegram (first as a freshman then as an RA, Pegram Pride! But I'm moving across the way to Bassett next year) which is as far from the bus stop as you can get. From there it is about a 5 minute walk to the bus but it doesn't look that far. (a lot shorter if you run) The C1's come "every ten minutes" during normal hours but they do tend to bunch up at weird times so sometimes one won't come for 20 minutes and then three will show up. (though usually not in the morning before 11) From the west campus bus stop it is another 3-4 minute walk (at a slow pace) to BioSci. Usually, my door to Bio 25 at 0845 would be 15-20 minutes depending on if I catch the bus right. (the bus takes about five minutes to get from campus to campus)

The other option for the East campus to BioSci treck is the C3. Now here you can sometimes have a problem of waiting for this bus and not being able to get on (especially in the morning, the C1's have this problem going back to East in the afternoo) so you need to work on your crowd tunneling skills. The C3's run fairly close to schedule and depart on the :23 :38 :53 :08 from Easty campus for Science Drive. The diference is really negligable for BioSci though. (Only really recomend it if it happens to come up or if you are going somewhere like Gross Chem or you are really good at planning to meet bus schedules which I am not)

The campus really isn't that hard to get around on though I wish it were more bike friendly. (not enought places to store bikes, too many stairs not enough bike paths) East campus won't take you more than 10 minutes to get from one point to another usually and while West campus is bigger you really shouldn't have problems getting to class or anything. I had an unusually tight schedule last semster that required me to walk from Trent on Central campus to Wally Wade Stadium, which is about as far as you could need to walk ever and that took me 20-30 minutes without running.

So really the only dificulty in transit at Duke can be the choke points know as the Busses.

so.... in sum, what this means is that you will probably have enough time. most days you should arrive just in time. if you happen to come to class a few minutes late, most professors usually understand, esp if its a bus related issue. if its a big lecture class, no one will even care. if you know this will happen frequently, then tell your professor early on that you come from east during a crowded bus time and sometimes it slows you down by a few minutes.

also, C-1's,(directly east to west) during the weekday during busy class times, (9Am-4pm) will come more often than every 10 min. usually in the morning, as im getting on the bus, there will be about 2 or 3 C-1's to choose from (depending on how full they are getting). i would guess they come maybe every 3-5 min during these busy times. after 4ish, busses slow down a bit more, coming about every 15-20 min. the busses can be slightly unpredictable, but its never a huge burden in my opinion, unless its a weekend cuz they come every 20 min then.

also, getting from the farthest away dorm on east to the busstop shouldnt take more than 5 minutes if you dont get distracted. if you live in jarvis or aycock though, you can just look out your window and make it to the bus within 30 seconds.

Meaning I should be able to get my classes if they are half an hour apart. Thanks alot for all the info!

In general, you will be able to get from any class to your next class on time anywhere on campus. The first week is always tough because no one really has a set routine yet. Once the semester gets into a groove you shouldn't have any problems getting between classes.

I had to get from the physics building on science drive to biddle at the far end of east in 20 minutes one semester without the help of the science drive bus, and it was manageable.
