How long does it take to get to the airport?

I need to book flights home for my Emory freshman and I don't know how much time he will need to get to terminal/gate. If he takes public transportation, leaving campus at 5:00 PM, what is the earliest flight he could get to? How about if he took a taxi? Anyone here know how much a taxi from Emory to the airport costs? Is there significant rush hour traffic en route?

$40 taxi. Definitely rush hour traffic.

50 minute public transportation (and $3). Catch the #6 bus to Lindbergh and then train to teh airport.

I would say he could catch a 7:15 flight if he is comfortable flying and knows what he’s doing once he gets to the airport… If he doesn’t fly much, I’d say 8.

Thanks for the info. He isn’t checking luggage and has flown alone before (although not through ATL) so I think he would be okay then with the 7:30 flight home. Wish his professors would not teach the Wednesday before Thanksgiving though.

re: wednesday classes – when I was booking D’s flight home for Thanksgiving last year, I asked her if she could leave Tuesday; she said no because she had class on Wednesday, and people asked at the beginning of the term if they would have class on Wednesday, and every prof said yes.

Guess what? As the holiday approached, every prof canceled their Wed classes. So she could have come home Tuesday after all.

That is what I suspect will happen but I can’t know for sure. Right now his economics class IS scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon and we really need to book his flight. What to do?

Just ask the professor. Some professors will cancel… Others won’t. But they’ll tell you if you ask them.

DS did ask. Econ professor told him the class would meet. Sigh. He cannot leave campus until 5.

I bet you a drumstick it’ll end up being canceled (just from D’s experience). Is this the business school Econ pre-req?

No, it’s microeconomics. He couldn’t get into business Econ so he is doing micro/macro. I think it will get cancelled too but you know if I book the earlier flight the class will definetly meet, lol!

And there’ll be a pop quiz that counts for 80% of the grade!

I had read previously that the Emory shuttle takes students to the airport during breaks. Anyone know if this is correct? Any info would be appreciated. Seiclan–My D just recently flew home for a weekend and her Friday class ended at 3:50–she went back to her dorm, called the cab and was at the airport around 5:30 PM–her flight left at 7:00 PM. She said traffic was pretty crazy but got there in more than enough time. Cab on the way to the airport was about $40 or $45. When she went back to the dorm that Sunday the cost was only about $35–I suppose because of the decreased traffic on Sunday evening. Some of the upperclassmen were encouraging her to take the MARTA, but since she had not done that before she felt more comfortable calling a cab. She plans on trying it soon though as it is significantly cheaper!

The shuttle did that my Freshman year . I used it and I definitely preferred MARTA. IIRC, the shuttle only took me to Lindbergh anyway, so it was a waste of time - hassling for seats with people who weren’t supposed to be on the shuttle/waiting for the shuttle because it was so late/etc.

I don’t know if it still does it.

Almost all Wednesday classes will be canceled. The normal exceptions are lower level language classes.

Assuming that early departure is not available, I think any flight after 7:00 pm is doable, although the early evening flights frequently experience departure delays.

Getting to the airport is surprisngly quick. 30 minutes at slack time up to 45 minutes at rush hour.
In my experience taxis to the airport are $50, but they are very convenient. If you can share a cab, go for it.

Other methods:
Student Council has run free buses, but they are not always convenient or reliable
Atlanta Superior Limousine runs a commercial bus for $35 from the dorm. It’s reliable.
Short taxi ride to Lindbergh, then MARTA to the airport, $10+$3.50.

DS has microeconomics with Mialon and so far says the class is not cancelled. It meets Wednesdays 3-3:50. He also has Spanish 212 that afternoon. I am thinking a 7 pm flight might be safest and I will pay the change fee if the classes get cancelled. I am thinking of limo/car service to airport for peace of mind.

Some profs do not pre-announce class cancellations. Perhaps he would like to see what happened last year?

I have taken MARTA a fair amount. The station is in the main airport building and MARTA bypasses surface congestion, so I find it convenient.

On the other hand, I can appreciate door to door service.

Personally if taking Marta, I would not take a bus to Lindbergh - there are stations that are a lot closure to the Emory campus (like East Lake) - if you go to Lindbergh you are going to be caught in Buckhead traffic.

I live about 2 miles from Emory and traffic will be bad on that Wednesday - taking Marta would be a better idea instead of trying to get a taxi to the airport - you can just never tell how congested 75/85 will be down to the airport. They would have to change trains at Five Points, but it is not that confusing - you can either go East/West or North/South.

My son is coming home for Fall break tonight so this is our preT Day trial. We hired a private car service that was recommended by the concierge at the Emory Conference Center. The cost is $55 to the airport, door to door, including airport fee and tip. If they are reliable this weekend then I will book them for the Thanksgiving weekend as well.

So far so good. Car service was reliable and took good care of my tired son (who was coming off an all-nighter studying for has last exam). He was picked up near his dorm about 4:50pm and he texted me that he was sitting at the gate about 6:15.

Nice to have him home for a few days!

seiclan - Nice to hear. chaz
