How low can senior year grades go?

Ask the college

i have i a friend who got in ED and is having trouble in Calculus, ans she called them and told them. They said as long as she didn't fail she's fine.

Another bad problem if you get new classes at the end of the semester is signing up for a lot of APs then dropping them after colleges have made their decisions.

but I think you could drop a single AP class, especially if there was a risk of getting a C.

actually...my weighted gpa is still a 99 even with an 80 in ap literature and ap calc.

You don't think if I get an F in Honors Calculus just once out of six semisters AND my GPA still stays above a 3.3 or so. You can't think that Penn State would kick me out, because this six weeks I f---ed up like 2 tests, and I now probably have like a 60%. I still have Three Weeks left in the Grading Period,,, BUT it's still depending on how many grades that we have if I will be able to pull my grade up to a D, by the end of the semister. BTW a D is a 65 and Above.

How in the world CAN PSU even look at all 6,000 Accepted Transcripst Anyways, Wouldn't you think they'd just check and see if the GPA is about the SAME. Could someone tell me that I'm OK. if I fail only once.

Only the college can tell you that.

It would probably be better to talk to PSU first rather than have them discover it. There is also second semester in order to turn it around.

just curious, how do they find out that you are "slacking," do they call? require counselors to send grades? STALK YOU..??

I'm in a similar situation. I picked up a college Calculus III class at the University of Cincinnati this first semester, and it caused me to basically drop a letter grade in my AP classes from the norm (so a B for AP gov and a C for Ap Chem), and then 60% of my class dropped AP English in the first week of school because of the teacher. I also had to drop an Ethics elective class because with my Calculus III class taking up most of the morning, I could only attend the class on Fridays.

Will I be okay too? I was accepted to Rice ED, should I write them a letter like some of you are recommending to the OP?

damn dude, seems like you are having a tough time. are you sure you really want the Calc class that seems to be screwing you up?

mrryprankster, it's over now. It was a bad call on both my counselor's part and mine, but hopefully it won't burn me too bad. I had 10 minutes per day in AP gov actually IN CLASS, and I missed AP Chem a couple minutes every day because of traffic, but I would not have done well in that class anyways. I just left me less time to do HS schoolwork.

Here's Junior year's 2nd semester grades:
Christian Thought A
AP Calc BC A
AP Physics B B
Heritage Studies (Honors english and history combined class)
A
AP Art A

And this year I will have (1st Semester):
AP Chemistry C
AP Government B
English 12 A
Drama A
Weight Training A
and Calculus III at UC B

They knew I was taking Calculus III, but also thought I was taking Ethics, AP English instead of "stupid" english as our school calls it, and Computer Programming. I'm taking ethics this coming semester, and Calc IV will be at night so I will have a full 7 bells this time around, but I'm hoping it won't be too late.

What should I do?

P.S sorry for the thread-hijacking...

I'm sort of worried. I will get 1 C (73ish) in math; it is my second C in my high school career (one C, 78, in math as well junior year). As you can see, I am NOT a math person, but I have been working with two tutors this semester, go in for extra help, etc. I get fairly good grades otherwise (UW GPA of 3.7). My grades this semester:
AP Euro - 83
AP Bio - 81 (hardest class I have ever taken! We got a new teacher this year for AP Bio who is really, really, really hard)
French V - 89/90 (expecting 90. This is an AP-level course, but not considered AP because we only have 10 students taking the course, and you need 15 to make it AP. However, I am studying to take the AP French Lit and Lang exams. Also, I have one of 2 A's in the class...the other is a French IV student)
Advanced Algebra/Trig - 73
AP Lit - 97
Government - 96

OK here's my situation. We have a total of six 6week semesters in My School.

In the first semister in Honors Calculus, I had a 75 THEN the second semister I had a 79. THEN this time I f-ed up two Quizes. and so our of say, 130 points I have say around 75 or so. that puts me at like a 62 or something. That is failing, butI still have THREE more weeks to go in this grading Period.

My questions is that if I by chance SCREW up another test AND the Teacher doesn't give very many more Grades(points),,,, If I end up getting like a 63 or something and JUST failing, Then do you think that PSU would kick me out. PERSONALLY, I'm pretty sure they would NOT, since they might have accepted me if I had gotten like an F in 9th grade. At least I hope they wouldn't.

Well, that's my predicament, I have to boost my Grade up to a D, within 3 weeks, OR ELSE,, lol.

Just asking for some encouragement that my life will not be Ruined if I fail this six weeks. BY THE WAY,,,, my Math teacher is a Freaking Dumb-ARSE. She is like 60 years old, and she thinks everyone likes Her (in truth most people sort of doo, but it's not like she's anyones Favorite teacher BY FAR.) Anyways, I'm at a small school and Out of 4 years of High School, I've had Her for 3 years. She is sooo Anoying, I really can't stand it. I mean, she always tells us about he kids, (as if we even Care). and she always yells about doing your homework. she'll e like in a Screachy Voice "You guys gotta do your homework, I couldn't Imagine not coming to school without MY homework,,, how are you guys gonna do in college" Meanwhile I'm thinking, well in college, I might actually LIKE Math class and enjoy it since I don't have the Same Boring, Annoying, Clueless Math teacher who is Oblivous to the fact that nobody really likes her.

Argh, I just had to let that out, I'm sure you guys have had similar Teachers,,,,, Am I right?????

lol Joey I actually like my calc teacher.....but I hated my 9th grade teacher so I know what it feels like to have a teacher you dont like :)

rufio055: It sounds like you have a reasonable explanation. I would write Rice explaining and you might have your GC contact them. Take responsibility in the letter, but you do seem to have some good reasons. You still have second semester to recover.

Remember that your college admission is conditional. Yes your guidance counselor must send the college your transcript as proof that you have successfully completed high school/ A major slide or anything that jeopardizes your graduating will get your admission rescinded. Keep in mind that the appplicant pool is getting more competitive each year and there are always people on the waitlist who have not let their grades slides. They are waiting for you to mess up so they can get your spot.

If you are getting merit money or accepted to a honors program, a slight slide could get your admission rescinded or loss of scholarship/ spot in the honors program especially if your slide no longer makes you eligible.

Amherst said C+ is as low as they'll let you go, and if you better have good reason to even go near a C+...

I'd be cautious of any class that you're struggling for B's in just to be surethat B doesn't slip.

Rescinding an admission offer is very rare. Colleges understand that you're probably taking tons of APs, still involved in ECs, and you're up to your eyeballs with everything else! I think the rule of the thumb is maintaining an A/B average.
If you're mostly an A-student, don't drop a ton of clasess and start pulling C's. A B here and there will be fine. Seriously, I think colleges would be more understanding if you made a B in AP-Calc than AP-Basket Weaving...I read somewhere that 78% percent of all students will make a C in AP-Calc.
Basically: Try to keep your grades as high as possible, and if you make a B or two, it shouldn't kill you. If it's a C, it should be in something insanely difficult i.e. AP Physics or Calc. If you are concerned enough, call the Admissions department and explain your situation.
Just worry about maintaining your class rank! And don't forget to send in your Midyear Report!

EDIT: I would also suggest this to soothe your tired, over-caffeinated minds:
<a href="http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000284.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/000284.htm</a>
<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A53287-2004Jul15.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A53287-2004Jul15.html</a></p>

Because actual mileage may vary, would you like to be the student that has a drop in grades to test whether rescinding your is true or simply talk?

Remember the whole admissions ball game has radically changed over the past 2 years (the time of which the 2 articles were written). Even then I knew 2 students in my D's graduating class that had their admissions rescinded.

There are considerably more students applying to college than there were in the class of 2008 and the pool is much more competitve where colleges really do have their pick and choose of students that they know will perform and will have the grades come june to prove it.

sybbie719, i got admitted ED @ harvard..

and ive always had straight A+s...so you're saying harvard is going to rescind my admit if i get some A-s because I've showed a lack in performace?
