How many books should you list in the Columbia application?
Some people say stick to about three but there ARE 300 characters available..
Should I pick only a few of my favorites? How many are appropriate?
Thanks! :)

As many as you read.

I definitely wrote more than three; in fact, I think I wrote 14 altogether. It’s always a good idea to communicate that you’re someone who enjoys reading. Although, if you’ve only read three, then you might as well leave it to that.

I used all the space that was available and then just added etc at the end cause there were just so many I wanted to list haha

I filled up the entire space, should we add authors too, because I did

Note: it says your FAVORITE books, not TOTAL books.

You don’t have to fill up the characters… I had about five books for each. I didn’t list authors.

NWdivisionCHAMPS > it does not ask for your ‘favourite’ books. it asks to “List the books you read for pleasure in the past year”. those include all the books you read in the past year.

Try not to over think the questions. They are meant to find people who will fit in well at Columbia. Answer truthfully - you want to be happy where you go to college for the next four years :D

cr_freak, sorry I was referring to the required readings where they ask for the ones you enjoyed most. that one i feel you should not list every book you read for school in the past year. the books you read for pleasure, you should list everyone except inappropriate ones.

and that’s a lot of books I just can’t remember if I listed the authors or removed those to make more room for more books haha

“you should list everyone except inappropriate ones.”

hahaha! letters to the penthouse…?

Thanks for the help guys! : )

I listed a book that was outrageous- Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs by Klosterman. While his topics are mature, he explores modern culture pretty well. So, while the title seems innapropriate, I think it was appropriate to list.

I couldn’t list all my books because they won’t fit. Besides, I thought a representative sample was appropriate, given they’re probably not interested in everything I read.

I just wrote as many books as I read; don’t be worried about having too much or too little as long as it’s true. I doubt that Columbia really takes the interests section into consideration when rejecting/accepting students. I think it’s just their way of trying to gauge who you are as a person.

@crystallix
How can you say that? They’re trying to build a class, so it’s VERY important for them to know students’ character and interests. They’re not just looking for applicants with the best standardized test scores, highest GPAs, and most EC’s.

pwoods, I wasn’t saying that I didn’t believe the interest section was important. but it’s definitely not the deciding factor.

“you should list everyone except inappropriate ones.”

hahaha! letters to the penthouse…? "

Dear Penthouse,

I attend an Ivy League college in New York City and I never thought this would happen to me…

^^ lol, imagine them being like, “You like angsty teenage fiction? REJECTED!”

I have around 10 I think, I couldnt fit any more! (exactly 300 characters)
