I’m wondering how much is a “typical” moving load for undergrad college students living on campus? I’m packing right now to move out for the summer, and it looks like I will end up with three 18x18x18 boxes (which I will store somewhere near college) and 2 large carriers that I will take home with me on the plane.
I know I only have necessities (except for my art supplies), but three large boxes and two large carriers seem like a lot to me. How much do college students pack on average? Any input will be appreciated. Thank you.
My daughter left 3 rubbermaid tubs on campus between freshman and sophomore years. She took a duffel home with clothes and lax equipment. She’s now moving out of a house after senior year and doesn’t have much more than that, except a few pieces of furniture like a butterfly chair, some framed pictures, etc. She’s leaving her bed for the next tenant and will probably even leave sheets and towels.
I’m headed to campus tomorrow to pick up all her stuff from her dorm room… she used TEN boxes 12x18 and asked me to bring 3 big plastic bins with me for “ the big stuff”. Oh, and we have to fit her guitar in the car too. I can’t imagine where all this stuff came from… at move-in, everything fit nicely in the car with room to spare!
We were leaving the country right after we left our daughter freshman year. Everything fit in the SUV we rented plus the luggage that my husband and I were going to travel with. It’s been stored in a nearby self-storage unit each summer since, and kitchen gear has been added as well as a few other things because my husband misses her and likes to shop online and send her things. I have a feeling it will be quite a bit more than the freshman drop off at graduation next year.
You might be better off with duffles or something else softsided where possible.
And if you’ll be going home for Thanksgiving, could you switch your wardrobe from summer to winter/fall then, if that applies? I’m thinking winter coat, boots and stuff could wait until they’re needed, saving you room when you first move in.
Really what does it matter as long as it is manageable. If it fits in your living space without driving your roommate crazy then you are good.
Based in what I have seen in the last 4 years, two boxes and two bags for clothes seems light and manageable. I have seen kids take sofa beds to college to put under the lofted bed. I have seen u-hauls and pickups filled with stuff all for a small one room double.
