How many colleges are everyone applying to?

HI CLASS OF 2013/2017!

I'm have major worries about my college list, because I have no idea how many schools is good to apply to. School Counselors say 7, my parents want like 15, and I'm good with 10. BUT I JUST WANT TO KNOW YOUR OPINIONS!

also...so far my college list looks like this: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Duke, Columbia, JHU, UWash, Tufts, Amherst College, AND NO SAFETY YET (I have to decide)

I'm not sure if it's bad to apply to so many schools that are alike...but I wanna be a neuroscience major, and these are all pretty good schools for that!

If you are applying to the top 20 schools, I would apply to 15, because acceptance rates are so low, even for tip top students.

If a person is applying to a lot of “regular” schools, then I would say 7 or 8.

Now, if you apply to the UC schools, you can apply to a lot of schools with just one application.

I have struggled a lot with the same question. If you are a reasonable applicant for the schools listed (your test scores are above their 50th percentile, strong grades, extra curricular activities that stand out) then 15 schools is a bit excessive.

My college counselor strongly advises applying to closer to 8 schools, but I’m inclined to apply to 11 or 12, which-- based on the types of schools you’re applying to-- is probably a good number for you too.

In case you’re interested list is as follows: Princeton, Cornell, Northwestern, Rice, Washington University in St. Louis, Stanford, JHU, Bucknell, Carnegie Mellon, Colorado School of Mines, and maybe MIT.

I think if you add a safety to your list and go back to make sure some of those schools are match schools, which you’re quite likely to get into (if not then add another school or two), you’ll be good.

I’m applying to 10 schools. 3 are kind of random though because they mailed me and said I could apply for free and they would let me know if I was accepted early. So I guess 7 are really serious applications.

im applying to 17…

agentpink thats quite a lot; dwindle it down to 8-12 if u can :D

I’m applying to about 10 schools. My parents thought 3 would be good enough…

Between 6 and 10. Not sure yet

15 plus all of the UCs. Honestly, that only boils down to four apps + some supplements (Common, UC, G’town, U-Washington). I started a few weeks ago and am right on track :)

3
Ohio State
Miami of Ohio
Trinity U

I’m applying to nine. One of my friends last year applied to 20 because his list was filled with ivies.

Be sure to apply early action as much as possible - if you get into some good ones, you may be able to cut down the final list in December! My son a few years ago was planning on 12 or 13, but with EA acceptances, he ended up applying to only eight.

I will be applying to 7 private schools and 5 UC’s. Privates are Stanford, UPenn, Duke, Northwestern, JHU, USC, and probably Georgetown. As for the UC’s, they are Berkeley, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and Davis. Early action to Stanford.

enlightening and at my school most people apply to 3 and have not EA. Most don’t take risks. I was thinking 5 and 1 EA

I remember years ago, some students’ first choice college happened to be a safety for them, so they applied to just that one college, got in, and attended.

I think your list is way too top heavy. Where are your target schools and safeties?
