How many colleges are you guys applying?

~20 schools and already submitted 10… Hopefully CMU accepts me ED

I really wanted to do 4- 2 reach, 1 match, 1 safety.
but economically it’s not very wise so I did 7.

3 - 1 match and 2 safeties

I think 15 is a lot. I’m doing 8 (2 safeties, 6 reaches lol).

I’m applying to 10 (4 UC and 5 Privates)

I’ve already applied to UPenn ED, so hopefully, everything works out well… =)

15 total
7 reach
4 matches
4 safeties

I dunno yet.

But for most people, I’ve noticed that when they apply to more than 10 it’s difficult for them to do a really good job on every app (unless they are simply common app with little/no supplement q’s). And for more than 15, it’s nearly impossible. Just my 2 cents.

(Then again, it all depends on the person). If someone is willing to put in the time, “never say never!”

^I’d say it isn’t that bad, since many schools have similar supplemental essays, so you can just recycle the format of your essays for those prompts. I still have more than a dozen supplementals to do though, so IDK if I’ll still be alive by January =</p>

To be honest, I’m quite astonished at the number of schools some of you guys are applying to. Personally, I’m applying to 4, and most of the top students in my class are doing the same. I find it difficult to believe that a high school senior would be happy at ALL 15+ of the schools to which they applied…it seems like some just bombard admissions committees with applications in the hope of getting into the Ivy League or (insert prestigious university name here).

I could, of course, be mistaken. But I know that I would attend any of the 4 schools to which I’m applying without hesitation; I don’t know if someone could say that about 10+, 15+, even 20+ schools…but again, if you can, then the more power to you.

Well, the way I see it, there are a LOT of schools one could be happy at. I’m applying to around 14 or 15, but many of mine are similar–and I’d be happy at any of them.

^Maybe I should rephrase: instead of “be happy at,” I think one should apply only to schools to which they would commit for the next four years.

I’m applying to either 11 or 12: MIT, Stanford, UChicago, Caltech, Harvey Mudd, CMU, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UC Irvine, UIUC, and possibly Cal Poly (which probably isn’t necessary given my stats).

^I think I would be pretty satisfied at any of these schools (except maybe Irvine, but there aren’t that many cheap safeties that meet my preferences), but maybe I’m wrong. All of these have very good math and CS programs, are close to urban areas, and have a high concentration of nerds. xP

The essays aren’t really too bad. I reuse MIT essays (or extended versions of them) for the UCs and UIUC, and possibly the Common App essay. After that, there aren’t too many essays to write, unlike for some of my classmates who are applying to like 10 Common App schools.
