How many courses do typical American high school students take per year?

My school has 7 periods all year, so students will typically take their 4 core classes, plus 1 to 3 electives or a free period.

As a Freshman, all 7 courses are required.

Sophomores have the option of 1 free period or another elective.

As a Junior, you can take Dual Enrollment courses, which fill both 6th and 7th period.

And Seniors can also take Dual Enrollment.

There’s also early work release allowed 6th and 7th period for upperclassmen.

So, we have 7 spaces that we can fill with core class, electives, free periods, DE’s, or work release.

I have the same schedule as the OP. sometimes we have little side classes that alternate every other day, but other than that its the exact same.
