How many credits a semester would you recommend one take?

If I were to take the classes I want first semester, i would be taking a total of 16 credits. Is it too much? I want to shoot for lateral admission into the honors program.

15 credits per semester is the proper amount to graduate in 4 years.
The minimum for full time is 12 and the maximum without special permission is 18.

Typically, 15. However, try and use the Summer semester to spread courses out if needed - especially very tough courses. Course management is important.

My daughter and I spoke with an adviser at Preview who said that it may be wise to take a lighter load your first fall semester (maybe 13 hours of academics classes - especially if your freshman year starts in the fall and not the summer). My daughter will be in honors and has a very strong academic work ethic, but the adviser made a valid point with the fact that all students go through a transition period adjusting to being off at college, learning to manage all those aspects of their life for the first time, football season, etc. The advice we received was to make your spring semester the heavier class schedule your first year to give you the total hours needed for scholarships and to keep you on track with your academic program.

The advisers do try to convince freshmen to take 12 credits the Fall semester. You can sign up for 15 and if you decide the load is too much after reviewing the syllabus and attending the first day, you can drop one. Remember you have to take 28 credits in the FALL/SPRING to keep the University Scholarship for Freshmen.

This is a stupid question, but how many credits is each course worth?

Most courses are worth 3 credits/hours. There are a few exceptions (labs, choir classes and the like), but 3 is the general rule of thumb.
