I was thinking about 17 credits for Fall semester with 5 credits really easy classes I think I will enjoy and rest Chem, Math, German (total 12 credits)

I think 17 credits is way too much for a new Fall freshman. 12-15 is optimum. If you take too many credits, you will have your nose in a book, and a butt in a library chair. Take one less class and explore campus, join a club or group and make a lot of friends. Don’t be in a rush to leave by taking too many credits. You will realize these were the best years of your life.

17 is too much… Even as a senior anything over 15 is going to be pushing it. I took 20 as a sophomore and almost died (hardly joking), will be taking 15-18 this fall and like I said, even as a senior it isn’t going to be all fun and games. Take a solid 12 hours of maybe one hard class and a mix of moderate/easy and get used to everything. If you are one of those “15 hours a term or bust” people you can always make it up in summer… I never understand why freshmen want to take 15+ hours… get burned out… gain 20lbs… and then cry because they have no life.

12-14 is a good amount. Don’t over do it.

Question: Did UF go to block tuition starting this fall? I know it was being discussed. And, if it did, wasn’t that based on a 15 hr schedule as far as how much one would end up paying? In which case, if you take 12 hours, you’d still be paying for 15. Right? I guess I haven’t followed it too much cause D’s always been over 15 hours, except for her first semester when she took 14.

zebes

They will start next year (fall of 2012).

Take 12-15 and enjoy yourself in your off hours. Anything past 15 and it gets pretty tough to have any sort of life if you care about your grades.

What about 16 credits as a transfer student, if one of them is a really easy online class?

I have 14.

Hey UfHopeful, I’m also a transfer student and I’m only taking 13 credits for this first semester. (4 classes total, 3000 and 4000 level) One of the classes is online, but I’m not familiar with UF’s online class system -I’m used to blackboard and finish the whole class during the first two weeks of the semester, but I don’t know if you can do that at UF.

I normally take 5-6 classes per semester otherwise I get bored, but because it’s my first semester at UF I want to get a feel for the classes, professors, how things work, where the buildings are, how long it takes me to walk/bike from one class to another, learn where everything’s at, maybe join some group, meet some people and make some friends since I’ll be new to Gainesville and don’t know anybody at UF, etc… I should be able to figure all that out during the fall semester so that for the spring I can go ahead and pack on my schedule with my regular amount of classes.

Just curious, what are your classes?

Well, 3 of them are classes for my major, which one is online (and they aren’t supposed to be terribly hard, but are 3000 and 4000 level) and then the other 2 are CGS 2531 (required for my major…) and CHM 2045 (necessary for what I want to do after college, finished everything else I need at my CC besides the chemistry sequence so I could have some of these classes done at a 4 year university). I am kind of concerned, but at the same time, 2 of my classes won’t be 3000 level so I don’t know if I should drop one, especially since I cannot drop CGS or CHM. I was considering taking another easy online class, but I don’t know.

I definitely think it’s a good idea to take a few less credits than normal. Maybe you won’t feel this way but my first semester as a transfer I got really overwhelmed with the 3000 and 4000 level courses I took just because it was a totally different pace than I was used to, so it took some adjustment and wayyy more studying than I needed in CC. That might not be the case for you guys, but if it is you’ll be really glad you didn’t overload yourself your first semester.

I remember hearing at preview from a presenter to think of adjustment to freshman year is like taking an additional 2-4 credits, depending on who you are. You’re learning to cook, to clean, to live/deal with possible strangers, to adjust from high school style learning habits to college style learning habits, ect - all on your own. You’re learning to be an adult. She said that a freshman taking 14 credits might feel like they’re taking a 16-18 credit course load…just passing on what I heard if it helps to think it like that.

I’m taking 16, but I’ve had my books since the beginning of June and have gone over the first unit for two of my classes (7 or so chapters for Calc, 4 for Physics). I’m also taking Gen Chem 1, but it should be review, as I passed both IB and AP Chem and could have skipped it if I wanted to.

I might drop a one credit seminar type class that I took out of interest, but I’ll wait to see the syllabus for the class to see how much work is required.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. It gives me lots to think about.
