U-M is my first choice school and I was deferred. I'm a reasonably strong applicant and I'd really like to know my chances of getting accepted because some schools accept more deferred students than others.

16%-- i have heard.

lindsy while i don’t have the official numbers (I’m pretty sure they don’t release them), I know it’s higher than 16%. From my experience last year, I’d put it at something over 30 to 40%, at least of last year’s applicants.

that’s what I have heard, KyleTwentyEleven. I read some where 1/3 of deferred students were eventually accepted. More students this yyear have been deferre from last, and I highly doubt that Umich will receive as many new high quality students as they might be anticipating. Numbers might be higher.

Where did you get that information?

Someone from admissions once told me that about 800 students that were deferred during EA last year ended up getting admitted later.

Oh boy. Remind me not to reply to any posts on CC using my cellphone anytime soon.

And I just supposed that information by looking at what admissions decisions were like posted on CC around this time last year. There doesn’t appear to be the same surge of deferrals.

sparrow,

Judging admission stats based on CC is probably a bad idea…lol

^Except when they’re not officially published, where believing statistics anywhere is a bad idea.

Probably so. But one can’t help noticing. -shrug- CC data is a little skewed.

When I told my counselor I got deferred she said not many people get in after a deferral from colleges in general and I should look at some other schools. I don’t know what she meant by “not many”… I really don’t understand the concept of deferring in general; I wish they didn’t say anything and just sent a yes/no decision when they made it!

Funnily enough, I didn’t really have an interest in Michigan and only applied because my mom wanted me to. Now that I’ve been deferred I want to go there more!

Michigan has admitted 15,000-16,000 students each of the last three years. This year, I am anticipating 16,000-17,000 acceptances. The applicant pool will be over 45,000, probably 46,000-47,000. As such, the acceptance rate will be somewhere between 34%-37%.

In terms of breaking down acceptances by state, race, gender, nationality, high school, RD vs EA, deferred vs undeferred etc…, Michigan does not release such data, so there is no way of knowing.

What is your source in believing that UM will increase acceptances with a class size that is decreasing to a target of 5700? Also, the chancellor is on record in saying that they believe the total number of applicants will be 45000. Tx

Gobluu, Michigan always overenrolls. Always. Without exception. GThere has not been a single year in the past decade where they came close to their “target” class size. Each year, Michigan eclipses its target by 500-1,000 students. Like I said, not even close.

This said, when a school joins the common app, the applicant pool grows, but the yield drops. As such, Michigan will have to adjust its admit numbers ot reach its intended goal.

As for my estimated number of applicants, I may be off by 1,000, but for now, I will stick to 46,000-47,000.

Michigan was considered a reach for me, not a far reach, but stil a reach. I got Deferred and they sent me a really bland and generic email telling me that. This was around the type when all the hype was being discuess about different deferral emails. Some kids even got emails saying “you are an elite candidate and we are still interested in you, I hope you stay interested in us” etc. So I had the “Bad” email and ended up getting in yesterday to LSA.
