How many essays?...

If I am applying to 7 schools, about how many essays will I need to write?

Like for example, if each of them require the common app plus a supplement essay, that would be two essays per college. So for the supplement essays I would definitely need to write a new essay for each school (sigh 7 essays), but how many common app essays will I be writing?

I mean, obviously one per common app, but do I write one and then that is the common app that I will be sending to all schools with that single essay, or is it wise to write a different essay for each common application that I send out, in order to make it more school specific?

I am a little bit lost here, so any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks!

If each school requires the common app essay + a supplement essay, you’ll be writing 8 different essays total.

The common app main essay will go out to all the schools you are applying to via the common app. Supplements are sent to their respective schools.

You cannot really send out 7 different “common apps”; it’s like this–the common application itself, once sent, gets sent out to all the colleges you are applying to using the system. You send supplements separately, since there are different supplements for each school.

Sometimes the supplemental essays will be similar questions, so if you are applying to two large, urban schools for engineering, and both ask “What draws you to this college?”, the essays will probably be very similar.
