I’m not fluent in any language (even though I’m in AP Lit), since I have accent ‘hiccups’ in any language I speak.

I can speak English and okay in Japanese. My household is crazy though- my dad speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Taiwanese, and Malay, and my mom speaks Khmer, Thai, and Teochew Chinese. Add my grandparents and you have French, Russian, Vietnamese, and Hainanese Chinese.

I’m a super linguist nerd, but not extreme enough to major in it. Still, I can say hello in at least 30 languages, and pass-of as fluent by flaunting just a few lines with good accents. My friend, who is a linguistic major, has a list of languages with basic comprehension longer than the one I listed.

I’m a native English speaker and currently in my 4th year of French study. I took Spanish for several years growing up but I honestly didn’t learn that much, it was very repetitive. But I decided (…earlier today) that I’d like to self-study Italian and eventually take some classes if I can. I’d also like to learn Latin (because hey, if I’ve studied all these romance languages, why not go straight to the source?) and something Norse/Germanic (e.g. Finnish, Irish, Swedish…) eventually.

And because I’m a bit of a LOTR-nerd, I’d like to pick up some Elvish for the heck of it. :]

^ wow, that’s pretty cool! i love being surrounded by different languages. i considered minoring in linguistics at one point too (back when i was in spelling bees and i studied etymology and language origins and such). That was in middle school though, and back then i used to know how to say sentences in several languages as well. But now i just don’t seem to find the time to learn :/

I speak/read/write English (born here, lived here, etc . . ), Spanish (7 years of classes, pretty fluent), and Hindi (family speaks it, basically taught myself to read and write). I realized I can understand Italian and Urdu/Nepali/any similar language perfectly though.

I speak English natively. I’ve taken Spanish in the fast track since 6th grade and I can more or less read it fluently but I sure as hell wouldn’t try to speak it. I study French and Arabic; not fluent.

I hate you all. English + French but I’ve given up on that because I hate it so much so after this year I plan on forgetting it all. Thinking about German for college though.

I’m fluent in English, obviously, and I’ve been learning French for 3 years and I started learning Spanish in September. I want to become fluent in those languages and eventually learn at least one more language, maybe Italian.

I’m fluent in English, obviously. After taking five years of Spanish, I’m proficient. I can speak with my relatives from Columbia pretty well. I’m sort of studying Italian.

My mom speaks German but has never taught it to me. She only ever spoke it with her dad really. I want to learn it though one day.

Right now, I’m thinking of studying Arabic and French in college.

Just saw this thread and think its scary how many languages all the people know haha. I only speak english and Spanish I (IE “Como Estas?” “Muy Bien.”)

^ Agreed. This thread makes me feel really stupid.

I am fluent in English (duh!) and can understand basic household Mandarin, my first language. I hope I can learn enough Mandarin in the next couple years to just take the AP exam in it (and actually be able to communicate with relatives lol). I’m also taking Spanish in school, though it’s only my second year. I hope to take the AP exam senior year, and I hope I can continue learning both Spanish and Mandarin in college.

English - Fluent
Bangla - Fluent
Hindi - Fluent
Urdu - Proficient
Latin - Proficient
There are about 3 languages I can understand, but cannot speak.
