Does anybody know roughly how many people apply for the dean's honors scholarship?
Also, do people ever turn it down?

In the past the number of people applying has been in the 1000-2000 range, I think last year it was about 1,300 based on what I heard at the DHS reception. The letter she got just said over 1,000.

And yes, usually half or more turn it down. Last year they awarded 75 of them, and 26 came to Tulane. The year before it was closer to 50%. These are some of the highest achieving students in the country, and many get similar offers from peer schools or even more selective schools such as Duke, Vanderbilt, Wash U, etc. Add to that some get into HYP category schools and if they are from low income families they might also get tuition fully or mostly covered thanks to their recent policy changes, and so they might choose to go there instead. Hard to resist the HYP nameplates sometimes.
