Dean's Scholarship

Does anyone know how many applied for the DHS last year? I read some old threads and some stated 10,000 and others 1,000. Since I just mailed mine out, I am hoping for the later. :)

Hi gabby - I don’t know for sure, but since about 34,000 people applied to the university in total the year that the poster said 10,000 applied for the DHS, that would be almost 1/3 of the applicants, and that is virtually impossible. So it was probably a typo by Tulane that year and they meant to say over 1,000, which is what they said in my D’s letter the next year. And in her year, there were just under 40,000 applicants to the university. At the DHS breakfast move-in weekend I thought I heard the number 1,300 but I am not sure. But her letter definitely said over 1,000 applicants, with 75 awards. And the 1,000-1,300 range makes much more common sense once one stops to think about it against typical behavior. What I mean is Tulane is pretty clear on the web site along with the DHS app what kind of record it takes to even be considered, so there is no way that many people would take the time and effort to do the project and get the extra rec if they were too far off those stats.

Good luck to you!

Thanks Fallenchemist!

^^ gabby,
I am the poster who said there were 10,000 applicants in 2008 because thats what my ds’s letter says. The 10,000 could have been, and probably was, a typo, but thats a big error to make. I never heard a different number, and don’t recall their mentioning it at the DHS breakfast. The beginnng of the letter read: “Congratulations! You have been selected as one of the recipients of our most prestigious merit scholarship. Out of a field of 10,000 applicants of unprecedented strength and quality, the committee was restricted to awarding Deans’ Honor Scholarships to only the top 50 members of the incoming class” [note: we were later told they awarded 100 with the hopes of yielding 50. The yield was 40]. This was also the year that they admissions office accidentally sent a letter intended for college counselors to the families of the accepted students. Oops! So maybe that was a tough year, overwhelmed with the over 100% increase in applications from the previous year. They probably fixed those glitches now that they have adjusted to the higher application numbers.

Do you still have a shot even if you recieved the 22k and not the 25k?

Thats a hard question to answer. But seeing a how you got some scholarship money, that means they do consider you a strong student. Good luck!

Thanks for the optimism. I sure hope so. I guess that means I just need to blow them away with the box project and recommendations!

all i can say is thank goodness for fed ex!!! looks like son’s will get there by 15th with sending it tomorrow or monday. dont know why we thought it was postmark of dec 15… read it again today and says BY 15th, assume now that means received by.

IIRC, my s asked his admissions counselor for clarification on the due date, and she said it was fine if it was sent by the 15th. He didn’t take any chances and got it in early. Probably, all things considered, its best not to risk it. Good luck!

thanks jym… agree better to make it in by 15th… early submission doesnt seem to be in his skill set LOL
