Hi, I'm currently a HS sophomore who is hoping to get into a top university. My strengths are in mathematics and sciences, but that's not to say I've decided that I want to major in engineering. Let's say I wanted to keep my options open and apply for schools that aren't engineering-focused. Would it hurt my chances to get into those schools if I took subject tests in only math, chemistry, and physics, even if I earn 780-800 in all of them? What if I added another subject test, such as US history? Would that make me appear more diverse? Or would some colleges only ask for my top 3 subject test scores? I'm just a bit confused if all subject test scores must be submitted to colleges, or if only chosen ones are submitted, or only a limited number can be submitted.

Check with the colleges you plan on applying to. If you want to apply to MIT and Caltech, then Math 2 and a science SAT II is all they need. If you plan on applying to Harvard, you need 3, preferably a math, science, and a humanities (history, english, or foreign language) [not sure if this is the Harvard requirement; just some assumption I have that I never bothered to verify]. If you can, just to keep your options open for college, take 3 SAT IIs: math, science, and a humanities.

Keeping your options open is a good idea.

D’s prep school recommend that every student take every SAT II that they are qualified for as soon as they complete the qualifying course. Take all tests while the information is fresh in your head. Then, when college applications come around, pay to suppress those test that you don’t need. Choices are good. You can take 3 in May and 3 in June.

What if I took math, TWO sciences, and a humanities? Would colleges only look at my top 3?
