How many to take?

Hi, I'm sure this question has been asked many times, but I want to specify my situation.

I'll probably be applying to Berkeley, MIT and Stanford, all schools that require 2 SAT subject tests. I know that I'll definitely be taking Math 2 and Physics as I'd want to major in something engineering related, however, I wanted to know if it would put me at any advantage to have a third subject test in a humanities/language subject.

For example if I took French, which would be my third option and I scored a decent, but not shockingly amazing score (perhaps around 700), would I be at any advantage?

Finally, I will have to take all my SAT II's in a single sitting, which means that I'm probably gonna need to keep concentration for quite a while. Do people find that doing 3 subject tests in a single sitting is overly arduous?

Thanks

My son took Math II, Physics, and World History in one day and said it was not a bad experience. If you are comfortable with standardized tests in general, then you won’t find three subject tests to be unbearable.

The good thing about taking a third test in a non-science subject is that it shows your breadth of interest. Most colleges want to see evidence that you are well-rounded, and a combination of science and non-science tests is one way you can show that.

700 is a pretty good score. I believe it would give you a small advantage over someone who took only Math and Physics. Not enough to get you admitted if the rest of your application is weak, but possibly enough to break a tie between you and someone else with similar qualifications.

DD prep school recommends just taking anything that you are qualified to take, as soon as you complete the qualifying course. Just take them all and don’t worry about strategies and tactics for particular colleges.

Taking 3 SAT2s in a day is very doable - after mine I was still refreshed enough to spend the rest of the day studying for APs. Speaking of which, have you taken an AP for any of the humanities/language subjects for which you’re planning to take the SAT2? If so, the SAT2 doesn’t have much of a purpose, though it certainly couldn’t hurt.

I’m a full IB student (school only offers IB).

I’m taking Math, Physics and Economics HL and French, Chemistry and English SL. Since I’ve been studying french for about 6 years now, I think it would be aright for me to take French, and if I put some work into it hopefully I can get a 750. I took an Italian practice test from the CB book and got a 700 to see how difficult the language tests were. Since my French is significantly better then hopefully I can score higher in that.

Thanks for the responses - I think I’ll most probably be taking French. I’ve heard that you can choose what order to take the tests in at the center. Is this true? This is important to me because I’d probably take Math/Physics first as they are a bit more important for me, and require extra concentration because of silly mistakes.

You can choose what order you take the tests. You can also sign up for French and then show up and decide to take Italian, or anything else for that matter.

Are you quite sure? If that’s true, then why do you sign up for specific tests?
