Just curious.

I know some kids apply to just one or two, and one guy said he applied to 27!

How many places did you apply to?
How many schools would you say is about right to apply to?

I’m applying to 10.
Apply to as many schools as you want. Just make sure that you like each of them, don’t apply for the sake of applying (which could be the case of the person applying to 27 schools)

I’m applying early decision but if I don’t get in, then 12 schools. That’s the average number at my school. 27 is completely excessive. But you need to have enough safeties, targets, reaches.

18 - a lot I know.

probably 8-10 if i don’t get into my ED school!

My mom applied to only two, which I think was crazy. One was both her safety and a school she’d love, the other was her reach and she got in. I wouldn’t go with that small of a number, though!

Doesn’t it cost money to apply, though? How much is that fee?

Yes, most are $75 each. Some of the lower ranked schools/safties sent fee waivers to me.

Hopefully only three: 1 ED and 2 in-state safeties (which hopefully I will have to withdraw from after ED decisions come out!) Might apply to 3-4 more if I don’t get in ED.

12-15. (3 are safeties)

Holy fluff! 27?! That’s insane! How much money does that guy have? App fees really add up! Anyway… one of my friends submitted all 17 of her applications the day she turned 17. I thought that was kind of a neat idea. Provided of course, that she really liked all the schools she applied to and could see herself going to any one of them.

There’s no set “right number” of schools to apply to. To be safe though, I would apply to about 2 safeties, 2 matches, and maybe 1 reach (or two if you have your heart set on it). If you want to be an obsessed college-applicant and go crazy with essays and interviews, then go for it. If you’d rather just apply to 2 that you know you can get into and you’re happy with, there’s no problem with that either. Everyone has their preferences and only YOU know what’s right for you.

I’m probably going to end up applying to about 20.
HYP obligatory Asian family application,
Then 9 reach schools, 4 target schools, and 4 safeties.

For ED/EA, I’m applying to 3 reach schools and 2 safeties. All three reaches are very high choices for me, so if I get into one of them I can cut out a lot of RD applications.

Given the very low acceptance rates at the top schools, I would recommend applying to 15. But if you are not applying to those tip top schools, then probably 7-8 is enough.

14 total

3 safeties
5 matches
6 reaches (including ivies)

“HYP obligatory Asian family application”

… that just made my day.

So, your safeties will throw financial aid at you and occasionally waive the fee? Interesting. I’ll probably apply to between six and ten. Any more than that and I still need to do research, I’m not the kind of person who likes too many options.

I will probably apply to some ivies, but not all of them. So, floridadad55, what do you mean by that? If you really want to get into one of your reaches, apply to more reaches?

Wow, those fees can probably add up quickly.

The irony of it all … you pay money to get rejected. :)

Bookworm:

The tip top schools have acceptance rates of only 10-20%. So it would seem to me that you could easily be rejected at all of them, if you only apply to 4 or 5. If you apply to 10 of them, you’ll probably luck out, and get into 1 or 2.
