Anybody know?
I was wondering the same thing
It starts out large, but will substantially shrink on May 1st when many students choose other colleges.
Still looking for an actual number.
For me it says
"Thank you for your interest in the U.Va. and your willingness to remain on the waiting list. (23,000,34)
What do you guys think the 23,000 or the 34 mean?
Can’t answer for sure, but keep in mind there are actually 8 waiting lists. How?
CAS IS
CAS OOS
SEAS IS
SEAS OOS
Architecture IS
Architecture OOS
Nursing IS
Nursing OOS.
It all depends on where the spots are. Later on say when someone who deposited at uva gets off the waitlist at a school they preferred, they will literally select one by one people to fill the program needed depending on if the person was IS or OOS.

No idea what the actual number is this year, but you can look at the 2016-17 Common Data Set to get a rough idea. http://ias.virginia.edu/cds-2016-17
@mamma1st under C2. It says Number of wait-listed students admitted:360
Is that number from last year?
@nbt012 Yes, that’s how many they took off the waitlist last year.
Waitlisted students, given the recent Washington Post article on UVA’s tracking of wealthy students you may want to write to Virginia’s House of Delegates Education Committee to share your story. Delegate Landes said i"t would concern him if applicants were judged on anything other than stated admissions standards." Seeing the strong qualifications of waitlisted students might help expose this issue. UVA will hide behind FERPA for the wealthy admits but making your voice heard can help expose the pervasive problem.
@tableleg and @nbt012, if you’re on the waiting list, click the link in your letter to go to the Waiting List FAQs. I put a chart there that shows how many offers we made every year since 2009.
We always fill out the waiting list part of the Common Data Set. The number is big (~2800 last year), but remember that there are TEN segments to the list. After May 1, we’ll know where there is room in the class (VA or OOS for the College, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing, or Kinesiology) and I usually post on my blog when we start making offers.
@Mariposa2 You can’t say it’s pervasive when only about .5% of the applicants were tracked due to related donations.
Tracking of children of large donors can also involve careful communications with the families, not necessarily admittance.
In any case, I imagine the wait list rapidly shrinks in size after May 1, when many students put down deposits at other universities. The number who are offered admission from the wait list greatly varies from year to year.
@seniromom2021 Pedantic point conceded. The practice is still unethical.
Not sure if this is the correct thread or not but my D wanted me to let all of those on the waitlist, that she has declined her offer to attend UVa as an OOS for another IS university. She recently read through many threads as she was comp templating her decision and didn’t want to wait (to decline) until the deadline. This may help one? It will not help all but she wanted to let you know, anyway! Good luck and much success to all wherever you may land!
@“Dean J” Thank you for your insight and information during this process!
Quint: Yes, if someone is definitely not attending UVa, whether on the waitlist or not, it is helpful for people to notify admissions as soon as is reasonable. That does allow spaces to be opened up and people on the wait list can be notified sooner.
