that's a most interesting observation. i only know one other kid that's applying from my school, and we're pretty much the same person, both in terms of stats and otherwise - i think at this point, i can know what he's going to say minutes before he says it (scary, i know... i need new friends)

Only one other person applied from my school too. She is pretty much definitely going. If I end up going to UR too, we will have lived in the same town since birth, gone to the same preschool, same elementary school, same high school, and same college!

Haha, interesting about all of the other people getting into college with friends...

I wonder whether anyone from my high school applied?

Even though I'm into Rochester I'm still FREAKING OUT about college, just in general. Does anyone else feel like this? I guess it's because not all of my decisions are in...

By the way, anyone who has MSN is welcome to add me: seole at hotmail.com ...I don't have AIM at the moment. I'd love to talk to some other potential students.

Hey so big change, I was seriously considering Rochester but now I guess it's out of the picture because I just got the 12,500/yr Rush scholarship from Dickinson. Rochester is a great school though...

hey seole, did you find out how much you're getting from UR?

Not yet, although I'm not expecting much. I applied kind of late, which might have had an effect on my merit aid possibilities there, or not, but at any rate I didn't get any. That's actually kind of a shame because I was actually leaning more towards Rochester than Dickinson before I found out. Anyway, most other people have had mediocre financial needbased aid, so while I'll watch the mail and compare, I'm not expecting anything much. I'll post about it though.

I really need good need-based aid, so I'll wait with you.
I have to say, though, the results on this forum are pretty alarming/disappointing.

Does Rochester even give need-based aid? I got the douglas/anthony scholarship, but I didn't raelly get anything else.

I got into Bryn Mawr and UCSD so I think I won't get into Rochester... it makes me sad that I'm letting go such a good school.

Whoops, I DID get merit aid from Rochester...I got an $8,000/year Dean's Scholarship. I think my mom said we just got some loans in need based aid...so overall the aid picture isn't that great, but it's flattering. I think I'll still end up at Dickinson because of the money, but it's good to feel like I have options, sort of....

Good luck everyone!

"The extreme winter weather and lack of sun are unfortunate."

********. There are so many popular, selective schools in cold places. How about Carleton College (or Macalester) in freezing Minnesota? C. had a 29% acceptance rate last year, and I think a strong yield (don't remember it). Cornell is freezing. University of Wisconsin. Notre Dame. Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin... Schools in the northwest with huge amounts of rain like reed.

Rochester has an awful yield because it is a good school and is used as a safety. Many students do not go because they never intended to and they get into better schools.

totally with u on that funk. and jeez, it's not like it's the arctic. for good ness sake, it's not even canada...very true, all the ivy applicants apply to UR as a safety ...

Rochester is warmer/milder during the winter than it is here, so I'm actually sort of looking forward to it.

"Rochester has an awful yield because it is a good school and is used as a safety. Many students do not go because they never intended to and they get into better schools."

Are there any top 40 schools which are used as safeties to IVYs that have a yield of 19%? Tufts, JHU, NYU, BC, Emory, Rice, etc.... are used as safeties by many top students. However the yield of each of the above is significantly higher than 19%.

Perhaps the yield would be a bit higher if U of R did not have a free online or commonapp application.

Any yield below 1/3 is quite low.
Regardless U of R is a fine school but many candidates who are applying to non Ivys apply there also and choose to attend elsewhere.

Despite the low yield, UR is still one of the top 40 schools, so it means the students they admit from the wailtlist are not very bad. Otherwise, how can they keep that position? Am I right?

True, U of R is a fine school; I never said otherwise. Academics are quite strong and some of the depts are top notch.

I was accepted. Rochester is one of my top two, along w/JHU. While I am excited, I am still very anxious about UVa, Northwestern, and of course JHU.

I sent my application on the 15th of January and I haven't heard yet...

I don't get it.... I got into Case w/ about $13,000 in scholarships, but got waitlisted at UR...

Does anyone know UR's statistics for their 'Alternate List'?

As I know, Case's acceptance rate (71%, more selective) is higher than UR (48%, most selective). But, I also know some people who got accepted to URochester, but waitlisted at Case. It's just so random that you can't guess! I don't know much about the "Althernate List", so sorry that I can't help you.
