So, I took 3 subject tests a week ago (Math 2, US Hist, French), and I think I'm going to retake at least history and french in october, then maybe take bio in november or december, because I'm taking AP Bio. Should I consider more (literature?), or is this already too many?
Do retakes look bad to colleges without score choice?

Anyway, in your opinion, what is the ideal number to take?

If you are junior next year, do take more subject tests. If you will be senior and have 2-3 subjects at 750+, you better spend your time on something else.

It depends on where you will apply. Most schools don’t want more than 2 or 3 subject test scores at most. Once you have that many with strong scores, there is no need for more from an admissions perspective. But, some schools use subject tests for placement. You’ll want to check the requirements at each school where you will apply to see how particular subject tests might be useful.

Haha I do not have 2-3 subjects at 750+ (unless a miracle happens) but I am going to be a senior.
I guess I mean, will a couple (or a few) not great scores hurt me if I still end up with a strong 2 or 3? Will colleges be like, you took too many?

Being realistic here… if you don’t have at least a couple of scores above 750, the tiny fraction of schools that do not have score choice are super, super reaches for you anyway. Your best bet is to retake and try to get 2 scores that are very good (above 750 if possible, certainly above 700). If you have to take 3 tests to get a couple of good ones, do that. Then use score choice to send the minimum number of top scores to the schools you are applying to. Quantity does NOT outweight quality in Subject Tests (or most other parts of the college app, for that matter).

Out of the 3 I took, math 2 might be over 750… and french might possibly be, though most likely not. I know these schools are super, super reaches for me haha. But I do believe I have at least a small chance (2300 sat first try and 4.0 gpa)… I guess I was just wondering, if a college sees that you took like 6 sat 2’s in all (including retakes of the same ones), will they count that against you?

At most schools, you just send your best two scores, so the school won’t know how many tests you took or how many times. There are only a handful of schools that require all Subject Test scores – Stanford, Yale, and Pomona are among them.
