how many transfer RECS are needed?

How many PROFESSOR recs do I need?

I'm a freshman looking to transfer for fall 06 as sophomore standing. I will send in my transfer apps by March. In hs, we needed 2 teacher recs. How many professor recs do I need?

The schools I have applied to (NYU and Barnard) each asked for one. Might depend on the school, but I believe that's the norm.

Yeah it does depend on the school. In terms of mine, most of them say at least 2 recs with one of them being from a teacher.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Dean/Advisor rec that lots of schools ask for in addition to a teacher rec... that's more of a check on how you're doing academically, whether or not you've gotten into any trouble and if you're good with the school financially and whatnot. Hope this helps.

just to end this discussion for once and for all: I know that colleges will require deans/advisors recommendations. But ONLY 1 PROFESSOR REC is requireD?

You'll have to check with each individual school you're applying to. In my experience, each required only one.

Yeah, speaking of this, I know of a few people accepted to very competitive schools with a supplemental rec. I'd really like to hear some stories of people accepted transfer to very competitive schools WITHOUT a supplemental rec...

I checked some schools and they said 2 are needed. How is a freshman suppose to get 2 PROFESSOR recs if he has only taken 5 classes the first semester? In large classes, the professor barely knows our names.

Are there any smaller classes you're currently in? I go to a huge state school and the rec I received was from an English teacher, since that class was much smaller than the majority of the others. Since you're applying for Fall, you can always try to get into smaller classes (like a writing class or somthing) Spring semester and develop a good relationship a few profs then.

Do any of your larger classes have discussion groups? If so, maybe you can approach your TA and see if s/he has any suggestions about how to get a good rec from a professor. If you can't do that this semester, you can try staying after class next semester or visiting your prof during office hours so they get an idea of who you are besides just another face in the crowd.

would a TA recomendation suffice? I know my TAs real well but I rarley see the professors.
