Am I correct??

Every test day is different.

There is some variance, but of all the tables I’ve seen:

9 - 0 wrong 800 100% of time
10 - 1 wrong 800 about 30% of time
11 - 1 wrong 800 100% of time
11 - 2 wrong 800 15% of time
12 - 2 wrong 800 45% of time
12 - 3 raw 800 8% of time

Also I calculated these score distributions:

12 - .5% of essays
11 - 1.6% of essays
10 - 5.5% of essays
9 - 10.7% of essays

Calculated from the data here:

Really? My daughter had none wrong with an 8 essay for a 760. So if one of the readers had given her a 5 instean of a 4, that 760 would be an 800? Ouch.

Just to illustrate how hard it is to get a 2400, she had an 800 on the math and missed an 800 on the CR by one question. And possibly missed an 800 on the writing by one subjective point on the essay.

At times, one may miss five (in the right places of course) and still receive a 2400. Usually -2 is an 800 for the CR, 0-1 on M, and 1-2 with a 12 essay on W.

And yes, I do agree that odd-numbered essay grades are annoying and demonstrates the subjectivity of the process. One essay point may influence a W score by up to forty points which can have implications in the college admission process.

Lastly, curves are figured before the test administration so it is not dependent on how the test-takers collectively perform.

My last Writing score with an 8 essay and three incorrect MC questions was a 690. The essay can really screw a student over; and the thing is, writing classes aren’t in the curricula of a lot of schools. An excess of literature tends to be the norm.

I had a 9 essay and (I think) one wrong MC for an 800. I still think I got off extremely lucky.

@ yodastreet: Really?! Wow. On the May '09 SAT, I had an 8 essay and also one wrong MC, but ended up with a 730 :/

how many can you get wrong for 700 cr?

Woah fled! That just ruined all my hopes! 70 points off with 1 error!!! Lol, I was planning on miss like 4 and getting a 720…Depends on essay I guess. First time I took it I got a 10. Next time I got an 8. If I get a decent prompt, I could probably get 9+…

@ HWANsy: I incorrectly answered 7 questions on CR (yeah, I was sick) and omitted one, and ended up with a 690.

@ joeblogsFAILS: Haha, sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you! I think the curve for the May '09 Writing section was just really harsh. The fact that I still had a horrid cough and a high fever didn’t help matters.

ehh i don’t think that -1 for math is ever an 800.
i got 790 while missing one question, and i think that’s the best you can hope for…

-1 sometimes yields 800 on Math.

Yes, a -1/800 M does occur although one can seldomly rely on it.

Also, on the topic of SAT essays, graders usually have a maximum of one minute to read and evaluate an essay before they need to proceed to the next given the high volume that must be graded. Thus, the SAT essay is by no means a rigorous evaluation of one’s writing ability.

so you’re telling me that if i had one of those lucky tests, my 2390 would’ve been a 2400?
great, i would’ve been happier thinking that i never had a chance -__-

Look at this way IBscrewed, you got one wrong for a 2390, my daughter had two wrong on the entire test and got a 2330 (darn essay). It’s tough at the top ends of the curve.

Not necessarily, as the more liberal curve would be the result of a more difficult test.

The scoring can really vary. My child had three wrong on each section, 1 difficult and 2 medium (not sure if that ever factors in) which was a 730 math, 780 verbal, and 770 writing. I can’t remember the essay score, 10 or 11.

Whoa. I wish I was as lucky as you! On the May 09 SAT I got the same thing on writing [9 essay, -1 MC] and ended up with a 760. :/
