i have a efc of 4,000...im planning on attending a private school with a total of tuition and room and board to be about 45,000...i have good grades and im just wondering how much i can expect to get in grants? i know i should get a 4,000 dollar pell grant. but what else? how much should i expect total? 5,000...10,000...15,000...20,000+?a ballpark estimate or personal insight would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, with an EFC of 4000, you are almost definately not going to receive the Pell Grant. I haven't looked too closely on the 2007-2008 Pell payments, as I am still processing off 2006-2007...but I know for sure Pell would be zero or pretty darn close to zero.

thanks for the reply..how much do you think i can expect if you were just going to guess?

Okay, I went to the government website (for Financial Aid Professionals) and retrieved the Pell Payment Guide for 2007-2008. Using the EFC of 4000, your maximum eligibility will be 400.00. Your actual eligibility will be determined by your institution based on Federal Regulations, but would not be more than 400.00...unless the 4,000 EFC you gave were to change.

it is very hard to guess that. There is a website out on the net that lets you put in the info and then will tell you what you might get at each school.
School 1 meets need - you would get grants and LOANS = 41,000. Could be 41,000 in loans, or 0 in loans and 3500 loan, 1500 work study and 37k in grants. With a low efc I think they can offer you loans on top of the 4,000 you parents can pay (borrow)
School B does not meet need. on collegeboard site, or looking at the common data set for the college you learn the average is 50% of need.
If you are the top level of applicant at that school you could still get 100% in need grants/loans (plus 4k for parents) Or you could get 20k in grants and loans, leaving 25,000 in owed by your parents.
If it's Princeton and a VERY FEW others, you get everything but the 4,000. Probably do get a work-study, but no loans.
If you compare your GPA, SAT scores and class rank to a school it will let you see where you fit. The see how often the school meets need or comes close to it. You can also read up here on CC in the colleges section if schools you want to attend are listed. See how many students were accepted but cannot afford to go because EFC was not met.
be sure to notice if the school included expenses, books and travel. Some do, so the price looks higher but if they use that number to figure FA it could be the same cost as the school that looks like less $.

thanks for the replies...if you can find that site that shows statistics for grants, gpa's, etc i'd appreciate it.thanks.

Check this

I set up a logon and was able to look at some pretty interesting info on the colleges of interest. It was generally data on the AVERAGE....and based on the student population. For example, it gave percentage of students getting aid, the average amount of need based aid, average student debt upon grad. etc. This will give you some approximations. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for your FA Package to arrive. Seems as if its getting late for receiving these to me, as the deadline for commit is fast approaching (May 1).

Are you looking at attending starting in Fall 07?

Oh yeah, I'll make it easier for ya. do a look up on MyFSA Colleges and click on campus tour. About 8 or 9 links that will give you some of the info you seek.
