For HYPMS, how much do AP exam grades of 5 matter in terms of looking good on your application (not counting getting college credit)? I"m especially wondering in terms of getting National AP Scholar and the like.

Any ideas about this? Thanks a lot.

Honestly, the grades, GPA, and sufficient test scores are the main factors. Schools will take into account self-reported AP scores, but they usually don’t have too much weight. If that was the case, then schools would just allow you to substitute subject tests with AP tests (NYU is the only school I know of that does that).
It can also help if you got a B in the respective course you received a 5 in, and look suspicious if your grade was better than your test score (an A and a 1/2/3).
In terms of HYPMS, it’s not going to really help at all in admissions into the school. Everyone gets 5’s and the occasional 4 or 3 on their AP scores who apply there. No one is a bad student, period. It’s like saying that being in the National Honor Society is beneficial to applying to HYPMS.
