How much do engineering schools care about non-science and math grades?

I’m currently in community college and am required to take GE’s like history and poli sci etc. If i were to get all A’s in math and science classes but get like one or two B’s in other classes is that bad for me? Do engineering schools look at other grades as much as math and science courses? Thanks

If you only get one or two Bs total, you’ll have a pretty high GPA and be in the hunt at a lot of schools. For some schools that are super selective, you could bet rejected even with a 4.0. It all depends on where you want to transfer to.

One or two B’s is alright, and won’t hurt you. If you strongly neglect your other subjects (history, English, etc) in favor of math and science, however, then that is a real problem.

You can’t expect to get all A’s in your STEM classes, because typically the median grade is C to B- (meaning few students get B and higher). You should strive to get A’s in your gen eds, because if you do a good job, or at least a decent job, your odds of balancing your GPA are better. All in all, try to get all A’s. 2-3 B’s over 20 classes won’t be a problem, but making only 2-3 B’s with no C and everything else A’s… is extremely hard in Engineering.

Engineering is a team sport. Verbal communication between engineers is important but in the end it must all be written down. That written communication is in the form of drawings and reports. Those reports have to be clear in what they say otherwise they are useless. Those non-STEM grades are important because, in part, they demonstrate your communication skills. A “B” grade isn’t bad but I’d much rather see a few "A"s sprinkled in there.
