How much do internships help in college admissions?

I have 2 summer internships, both at startups at which, I worked on their Android app. I was wondering how much( if they do at all) would they help in my decision?

I wanna know as well

BUMP

In terms of finding a job after college they matter a lot but in terms of admission not important.

Anything you do with your time is of interest. Demonstrating that you have skills and commitment is always good.

It really depends. If your internships are isolated extra-curriculars that don’t have much connection to the rest of “you” as portrayed in your application, then they’re nice but don’t matter a great deal. If you’re an aspiring Computer Science major who has great grades in that area, plus a strong recommendation from a computer science teacher, and you write your essay about how working on these start-ups was a very meaningful experience, then they could mean a great deal.

Thanks a lot everyone!
And yes, I am an aspiring Computer Science major, and a big part of my essays is about the experience i’ve had interning.

There was a guy last year who was taking 29 units of engineering courses while working full-time and still got rejected from UCLA. His essays were about how much he learned from his job.

You would think that having an internship in your field would give you an advantage but that really isn’t how college applications work. The people reading the essays will be living in academia instead of business or engineering so their values are different from what goes well in an interview. They will want people who will contribute on campus, not people looking to secure the best post-grad job. Topics about making a difference in someones life or something like that also work a lot better as essay topics because they come off warm and endearing.

This isn’t to say internships are bad because they definitely will help you come off as ‘more’ well-rounded but internships in terms of college admissions is no a huge criteria.
