How much does a good ACT score make up for a lower than average UC gpa?

My dream school at the moment is UCSB. The average student admitted has a UC gpa of a 4.0+, and I only have a 3.68. If I got a 34 on the ACT would my chances improve? I’m also looking to apply to UCI and UCSC.

UC’s are very GPA focused however if you have a compelling reason for a lower than average GPA, than it will be considered if you address it in one of your essays.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:

UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 15%
UCSB: 14%
UCI: 13%
UCSC: 59%
UCR: 78%
UCM: 92%

According to UCSB’s website, they consider 50% GPA/Test scores and 50% EC’s/essays in their application review. Definitely apply if it is your first choice, but make sure you have a wide variety of other schools also on your list along with 1-2 safety schools. Intended major and HS course rigor will also play important part in your chances.

Best of luck.
