How much does my SAT score hurt me...

I know SATs aren’t everything, but I believe sometimes low scores can harm you. And I’ll be retaking it this October and so am studying to get my scores up. From the test in May, I got a 1910.

Most posts on here I’ve seen are of people with 2000+ scores so I was wondering…if I still don’t get over 2000+ after my retake, how much my SAT scores could sink me? (Besides getting excellent recs, essays, gpa, etc.)

It depends as SAT scores are only one measurement in the application process.

How do your scores break out as far as math, cr and writing?
what schools are you interested in?
If english is not your first language you wil lalso have to take the TOEFL
How are your SAT II scores?

Remember that the international pool of candidates is a very competitive pool with many applicants for very few spots. So as far as international applicants are concerned, if you are looking to apply to the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, or other selective schools, then yes there are going to be plenty of other students that will knock you out of the box as far as SAT scores are concerned.

Math:690 CR:630 Writing:590

SATII so far I've taken...(am retaking both in Nov)
Math IC:670 Literature:620
I'll also be taking Japanese w/ Listening in Nov ...but I except good scores from that as I know quite a bit of Japanese having lived here all my life. I don't speak it at home though... do you think taking it'll count against me?

TOEFL:297(computer based)

Dream school: Georgetown Univ. Other I'm applying to are Amherst College, Boston Univ, Univ of Virginia, Univ of British Columbia, George Washington Univ. Am applying to UPenn,Cornell,JohnsHopkinsUniv although I know I probably have very little chance of getting in.

I'm an I.B diploma candidate student, take 4 higher levels (English, French, Economics, Music) and 2 standards (Math, Biology). I don't know what my GPA is, as our school doesn't calculate them until we're into our senior year – don’t know rank either…out of 33. Tiny school.

Grades wise, junior year was A’s except for a B+ in Econ. Am pretty much done with my CAS hours except for Activity…just got a few more left to do. For those of you who don’t know, CAS requires 50 hours of each category; Creativity, Action, Service.

In comparison to to your stats, your list is very top heavey with reaches with no real matches or safeties, which I think that you need to incorporate.

I would suggest going to the websites of each school that you are interested in , read their common data sets which will give yo a weatlh of information about the admitted class.

Rich posted a listing of common data sets of various schools which can be found at:

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

Instead of focusing on how much your current score will hurt you, pick up a book of practice tests and work yourself to death.

I went from an 1800 to a 2100 in 4 days, and my math score went up 150 points.

You can do it. Just practice.
